Clarksburg Hires Full-Time Assessor

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board voted Monday to hire two new employees: a full-time assessor and an administrative assistant.   Romana Messer, a senior paralegal for the city of Pittsfield, was selected as the new assessor after the board interviewed two other candidates, Beatrice Rozon and Thomas Scapin. The board also voted to offer the administrative post to a candidate but she has asked for time to decide.   Messer told the board last week that the position was her "dream job."    "I love real estate, and I'm a numbers girl. SteepleCats' Rally Falls Short in Regular Season Finale

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The North Adams SteepleCats rallied for five runs in the bottom of the nintn but dropped an 8-7 decision to the Bristol Blues in the New England Collegiate Baseball League regular season finale at Joe Wolfe Field on Wednesday.   Bristol pitcher Jordan Paradis got a fly ball out with the bases loaded to end the game and give the SteepleCats a 21-23 record to end the regular season.   North Adams had already secured the third seed in the NECBL North Division, and it will open the league playoffs at No. 2 Sanford, Maine, on Friday in the first game of a best-of-three series.   The Mainers will be at Joe Wolfe on Saturday evening for the second game of the

Greylock School Project Running Under Budget

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Greylock School project remains under budget by more than $1 million.   The School Building Committee last week voted to submit the 90 percent design package for the $65 million project to the Massachusetts School Building Authority with costs supplied by independent estimators.    "You'll remember that we locked in with the MSBA with their budget at the end of schematic design, and we entered into the project funding agreement," said Timothy Alix of Colliers International, the owner's project manager. Greylock Thunder 12U Team Wins County Title

ADAMS, Mass. – Abby Dieterich went 3-for-3 with three doubles and four runs batted in on Wednesday to lead the Greylock Thunder 12-and-under softball team to an 18-4 win over Dalton in the final game of the Berkshire County Tournament.   Three Greylock pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the five-inning win in the summer finale for both teams at Russell Field.   Dieterich led a nine-hit attack for the Thunder, which also got two base hits apiece from Tenley Biros and Liana Steiner.   “We’ve spent a lot of time on hits with them, all winter, all springtime,” Greylock coach Michael Biros said. “We’ve had an amazing season with this team.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — There's a cat at No Paws Left Behind who is patiently waiting for his new family.   iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home.   Umo is a 4-year-old black domestic short hair. North Adams Sees Races for Mayor, School Committee & City Council

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city will see races for mayor, City Council and School Committee in November.    There will be no preliminary election.    Tuesday was the deadline to submit nomination papers with signatures of at minimum 50 registered voters. Candidates do have until Aug. 14 to withdraw before the ballot is set.    Jennifer Macksey is being challenged for a third term in the corner office by Scott Berglund. Both candidates took out papers in April; Macksey had hers back in 19 days while Berglund submitted his June 12.    Richard David Greene took out papers on June 5 but did not return them.    The seven incumbents running

MassDOT Plans $19M Fix for Bridge North Adams Hopes to Tear Down

Clarksburg Dealing With Dog Scofflaws

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board last week gave Animal Control Officer Diana Worth the go ahead to get tough with people failing to follow the town's dog laws.    Worth, hired earlier this year, has been dealing with dogs running loose and an owner of five animals who refuses to follow state law on licensing.     She said there are two dogs running loose, one owned by occupants of a mobile home and another it runs with that lives a short distance away. The dogs are aggressive and she now has a report they are going after livestock. She said three people have reported being bitten.    "They're not even licensed," Worth told the
