North Adams Council Reappoints City Clerk

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday unanimously reappointed City Clerk Tina Leonesio for a three-year term to end in January 2028.   Council President Bryan Sapienza recommended her reappointment.   "I would not make this recommendation if I had not had full confidence in Clerk Leonesio," he said. "It's been a pleasure working with you over the past year as president of the council."   She was immediately sworn in by Assistant Clerk Melissa Kilbride.    Leonesio brought calm to an office that had had a rotating roster of clerks since 2019. North Adams Dunkin' Donuts Reopens with Community Donation

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dunkin' Donuts celebrated its reopening after undergoing a recent remodel by presenting the Al Nelson Friendship Center Food Pantry with a $3,000 donation.   "We are very thankful for Dunkin' Donuts for the very generous donation," the center's Board President Lois Daunis said Thursday morning after accepting the award. Man Sentenced to State Prison After 2022 North Adams Drug Offense

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nichols Melendez, 33 of Springfield, was sentenced in Berkshire Superior Court to seven to nine years in state prison.   On Monday, Dec. 2 Melendez pleaded guilty to six charges related to drug distribution and illegal firearm possession.   According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, On March 15, 2022, the North Adams Police Department executed a search warrant of 64 Charles Street, North Adams. The search was conducted based on previous investigation a suspected large-scale drug distribution involving Melendez.    There were four people in the Charles Street residence during the search including Melendez and Troy Dupras.

Have you heard about the proposed industrial logging project at our forested public drinking-water reservoir in North Adams? In the late summer there was quite the hubbub (rightfully) after the Conservation Commission recommended that herbicides not be sprayed ... next to Notch Reservoir. It seems ridiculous it was ever a plan supported by Mass Audubon. After nearly two years of secretive planning this was the first time most of us heard about this project.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city's down four alcohol licenses for 2025 with the closing of the Mohawk Tavern, Meng's Pan-Asian, Bistro 413 and the Breakroom.    The License Commission last week approved the annual pouring, entertainment, package, liquor and automobile dealer licenses for the coming year.    Commissioner Rosemari Dickinson said Bistro 413 and Mohawk had alerted her they were not renewing; Meng's surrendered its license in September and the Break Room when it closed in September.    "It's a hit. ... North Adams' Bernard Calvi Honored for Making the Ultimate Sacrifice

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — When Pvt. First Class Bernard Calvi died in a prisoner of war camp in World War II, his cause of death was listed as "dysentery, malaria and loss of hope," mourners were told during Tuesday's funeral service at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.   Calvi's captors got it wrong.   The 23-year-old Calvi's story was one of hope.   "We find solace in knowing that he now rests in the arms of our savior, experiencing the life promised to all who believe," the Rev. Clarksburg Sets Tax Rate; Interviews TA Candidate

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Property owners will again see the tax rate drop — and may also see their bills drop as well.    The Select Board on Monday night voted after a tax classification hearing to again maintain a single tax rate. Members also interviewed the first candidate for the town administrator post, former Select Board Chair Ronald Boucher.   The average single-family home as increased in value by $13,000, from  $222,151 to $235,243. WWII Soldier Coming Home Friday

Bernard Calvi NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A World War II hero will be returning to the Berkshires on Friday night, 82 years after he died as a prisoner of war in the Philippines.   Pvt. First Class Bernard Calvi's body will arrive from Hawaii on Friday and will be taken to Paciorek Funeral Home in Adams that evening.    A welcome home standout will take place on Hoosac Street in Adams beginning at 8 p.m. Calvi is set to arrive at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut at approximately 6:40 p.m. and arrive at Paciorek Funeral Home about 8:20.    Calvi had enlisted in the Army Air Forces in September 1940.
