North Adams Files Suit Against Scrapyard for Back Payments, Fire Costs

Apkin & Sons closed in December and says its cleaning out its five-acre property.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Redevelopment Authority is asking the court for an attachment on Apkin's scrapyard to prevent the company from selling the 5-acre property.   The authority and the city of North Adams are seeking more than $200,000 in alleged delinquent lease payments and firefighting costs as well as cleanup and environmental monitoring at the site in a request for a preliminary injunction.   Apkin, represented by Donovan & Connor, is countering that it owes nothing for the "free public services" of fire suppression and that, at most, it owes $30,000

North Adams Police Temporary Quarters Nearly Complete

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Police Department expects to be moving into its temporary quarters next month.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey told the City Council on Tuesday that the renovations at the former juvenile are "about 95 percent complete" and that the furniture will be arriving this week.    "Our hope is to have all the communications and everything run by March 1,  but I will say that's a soft date," she said. "We're doing a little bit of a dance with Verizon right now. Adams New K9 'Adam' Will Greet the Community Friday

ADAMS, Mass. — The police force's new K9, dubbed "Adam," will be with his handler Officer Curtis Crane at Adam's Hometown Market on Friday, Feb. 17, from 11 to noon.    Adam is the first  K9 fully funded as a direct result of the Hometown Foundation's Police K-9 Awareness Fundraiser. The fundraiser collected in-store donations at the register in all 18 Adams Hometown Market locations to collectively fundraise for the Adams K-9 Fund, which resulted in the purchase of K9 Adam. Adams Names First Police Department Corporal

North Adams Council OKs Police Cruiser Funds, Short-Term Rental Ordinance

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city is taking possession of two new cruisers ordered two years ago.    The City Council on Tuesday authorized the transfer of $109,582.13 from the Parking Meter Reserve Account to pay for the vehicles.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey said the 2020 cruisers will replace two that have more than 100,000 miles on them. One is from 2103 and the other a 2017.    "We currently have a balance of roughly $206,000 In the Parking Meter Reserve. Adams Burglary Suspect Dies

ADAMS, Mass. — Authorities say a suspect in a burglary last week on Spring Street died the day after the incident.    Mark Bednarz, 56, died on Friday, Feb. 10, while in the hospital, according to the District Attorney's Office, which released the information on Tuesday.   Police had confirmed that there unspecified injuries in the daylight breaking and entering at a home on Spring Street.    Adams Police and State Police had responded to the home of Thomas Granger, 73, at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9.
