NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The mayor is asking for an updated taxi ordinance with clarity — and some teeth. This is prompted in part by violations made by a local cab company in which police were hamstrung in their ability to enforce city ordinance. The City Council at a special meeting on Wednesday put OTT taxi on notice with a warning further infractions could mean suspension or revocation of their license to operate. "We don't have anywhere that gives anyone — even under the non-criminal disposition — an ability to give them a fine," Mayor Jennifer Macksey said on Wednesday.  BENNINGTON, Mass. — On Friday, March 3, Bromley Mountain Ski Resort will hold their 20th Annual "Mom's Day Off" fundraiser. Moms ski or ride for just $25 when they show the ticket seller a snapshot of their kid or kids (including honorary moms and pet moms). Regular lift tickets cost $89. Once again, this year's event will benefit women's breast cancer care at the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center in Bennington, part of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC). North Adams Youth Basketball is adding some prominent youth sports supporters to the walls of the Armory. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Anyone who has attended a basketball game at the Armory knows that the facility's limited spectator areas can get crowded pretty fast. But a handful of outstanding fans now have a permanent seat to watch the action. On Saturday at noon, North Adams Youth Basketball League will unveil a mural it commissioned to adorn the walls surrounding the court at the Ashland Street venue. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday issued a stern warning and 30 days of probation to a local taxi company. The vote came after nearly an hour of debate over suspending the license of OTT taxi. "Again, I will reiterate, if you're back here again, it will be my recommendation, and I think my councilors will probably follow along at that point, because they'll feel like they've been slapped in the face," said President Lisa Blackmer. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School has received a $600,000 state grant to expand its practical nursing program. Superintendent James Brosnan announced the grant at Thursday's School Committee meeting. The funds, which become available starting July 1, come after the school received a $3,110,000 grant to construct a 5,580 square-foot HVAC facility in December. "Great news for us that we were awarded [this]," Brosnan said. "Actually, we were the only vocational school that was awarded a grant for expanding, so we're really thrilled about that."  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More than 30 municipal entities that are members of Berkshire Health Group will see health insurance rates rise by 1 percent in fiscal year 2024. But the impact for many could be closer to a 9 percent hike depending on how they budgeted for health insurance costs in FY23. The board of the joint purchasing group Monday morning approved the 1 percent hike for the year that begins on July 1. But, unlike last year, there was no vote on whether to offer members a one-month "premium holiday" in the coming fiscal year.
