McCann School Committee Approves $11.5M Fiscal 2024 Budget

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Technical School budget is up just under 8 percent for the coming year largely because of contractual salary obligations, vocational and educational supplies, utilities and the addition of two more instructors.    The School Committee on Thursday approved the $11.5 million fiscal 2024 budget, of which about $4 million will be raised through assessments on its nine member communities. That's up about $320,502, or 8 percent, over this year.   Daniel Maloney Jr., chair of the Finance Committee, said the $842,575 increase was also driven by inflation and increases for health insurance, as well as an additional 15 students next year for a

Veteran Spotlight: Airman 1st Class Tim Flynn

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Tim Flynn served his country in the Air Force as an airman first class from 1963 to 1967 and is a Vietnam veteran.    Born in Newport, Ky., he enlisted at the age of 17 with his dad co-signing for him.    "Had a couple friends that were going in so I decided I wanted to as well," he remembered. His basic training took him to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. "It was hot as hell as it was in the summer and they gave us salt pills — guys were dropping like flies from heat exhaustion.   "I wanted to be a pilot, but they gave me a test and found out I was color blind. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Hartford Junior Wolfpack scored four straight goals to earn a 4-1 win over the Northern Berkshire Black Bears in the 14-and-under A Division final at the 2023 Spring Fling.   Four different players scored a goal, and Jack Almon backstopped the Connecticut squad to a team title in the three-day tournament at the Peter W. DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The MCLA baseball team Saturday split a double-header with Maine-Farmington, winning the first game, 9-7, and falling in the nightcap, 5-4.   Michael Wormuth went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs in the win. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — March is hungry bear season, says the state Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.    Wildlife officials are reminding the public that bears are beginning to emerge from their winter dens and seek out food.    Residents in northern Middlesex County, Worcester County and Western Massachusetts, or other areas where bears have been spotted, should know it's time to take down bird feeders.    Natural foods such as acorns and other nuts are usually available on the ground, but last year's fall hard mast crop was meager. North Adams Library Hires Assistant Director

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The library trustees welcomed new Assistant Director Ryan Miller, who started on Feb. 21.   "We are happy to have him here," Library Director Veronica Clark said at Wednesday's meeting.
