ADAMS, Mass. -- An eight-mile, mostly uphill climb to the the highest point in the commonwealth is enough of a challenge for any runner. For Mount Greylock Regional School senior Rafael Mellow-Bartels, Sunday brought another problem. "I think, for me, the main challenge was just running without anybody around me," Mellow-Bartels said after completing the 48th annual Mount Greylock Road Race. "It was kind of foggy for the last two miles, so I couldn't see anybody. I had my watch, so I knew how far I was, and I knew my pace. But I didn't know where anybody else was. I think that was the challenge for me." Mellow-Bartels may have to get >> Read More |

Former NFL Player Shares Message on Overcoming AdversityBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports 06:20AM / Thursday, August 29, 2024
DALTON, Mass. – By any reasonable measure, Keith Willis has been a success in sports and in life. And the former NFL tight end probably inspired a little awe among the Wahconah High School student-athletes who filled the Nessacus Middle School auditorium on Wednesday evening. But he did not come to show off. He came to show those students how to be winners themselves. “How many think it’s cool that I played for five different NFL teams?” Willis said, asking for a show of hands from the youngsters. “It’s pretty cool, right? “You know what people don’t think about? That means I was cut five different >> Read More |
A Rare Bird: Koperniak Stands Out in Triple-ABy Frank Murtaugh, The Memphis (Tenn.) Flyer 06:00AM / Wednesday, August 28, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- I’ve interviewed professional baseball players for more than two decades. There are talented players who, honestly, aren’t that interesting away from the diamond. They’re good ballplayers, and baseball is what they know. There are also very interesting baseball players who aren’t all that talented. Now and then, though, you find yourself in the home team’s dugout at AutoZone Park with a very good baseball player who has a very interesting story to share. Like the Memphis Redbirds’ top hitter this season, outfielder Matt Koperniak. That story? It began on Feb. 8, 1998, when Koperniak was born in London. (Koperniak played for >> Read More |

Berkshire Thunder Stays Unbeaten in BABLBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports 12:55PM / Sunday, August 04, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Aaron Ricci went 4-for-4 with three RBIs Saturday to lead the Berkshire Thunder to victory over Tunnel City Freight as the Thunder stayed unbeaten in the Berkshire Adult Baseball League’s 33-and-over division. Berkshire improved to 13-0 this summer and completed a two-game season sweep of second-place Tunnel City (9-4) in a game called in the top of the sixth inning due to rain with the Thunder leading, 9-0. Six of those runs came in that sixth inning in a steady downpour. After losing his grip on a pitch that sailed far behind the batter, Tunnel City player/manager Mike Cirullo decided to put an end to the contest. Berkshire, >> Read More |
