NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The restaurant 413 Bistro is closing this month after three years in the downtown. The eatery, owned by the Brassards, opened in what was then the Holiday Inn, replacing the defunct Richmond Grill. The restaurant had been signed on by the previous hotel owners shortly before it was sold to NA Hotel LLC, operated by Peregrine Group, and renamed Hotel Downstreet. 413 Bistro announced its closure as of Sunday, Nov. 24, on its Facebook page on Friday. What does environmental justice mean? North Adams has been designated an environmental justice district. This is designed to give traditionally marginalized populations a voice in the political games that impact the well-being of their neighborhoods. When a recent editorial by Eagle columnist Lauren Stevens suggested that anti-logging protests in North Adams "had an edge to them" many residents were annoyed that anyone would expect otherwise. NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— With outdoor fuel sources extremely dry and no meaningful precipitation expected, North Adams Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre and municipal leaders are extending restrictions on any outdoor fires at least until Friday, Nov. 22. "This has been an unprecedented fall fire season in Massachusetts," said Chief Brent Lefebvre. "The current and expected weather conditions mean that any outdoor fire is likely to spread quickly and become difficult to control.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday voted to maintain the split tax shift, resulting in a drop in the residential and commercial tax rates. However, higher property values also mean about a $222 higher tax bill. The vote was unanimous with Councilor Deanna Morrow absent. Mayor Jennifer Macksey recommended keeping a 1.715 shift to the commercial side, the same as last year. This sets the residential rate at $16.71 per $1,000 property valuation, down 43 cents, and the commercial/industrial to $35.22, down $1.12. As a lifelong resident of the Berkshires and current MCLA student, I have come to possess a great fondness for the nature intertwined within our towns and cities. Even as a person who generally gravitates towards the indoor side of life, I believe we strike a fine balance between natural land and industry here in Western Massachusetts. One needs little more than to look around at wonderful mountain forests that surround us to realize the beauty at hand. It saddens me greatly, then, to see our governing bodies propose plans to disrupt this balance, and tear away our beautiful scenic views.
