Clarksburg Sets Tax Rate; Interviews TA Candidate

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Property owners will again see the tax rate drop — and may also see their bills drop as well.    The Select Board on Monday night voted after a tax classification hearing to again maintain a single tax rate. Members also interviewed the first candidate for the town administrator post, former Select Board Chair Ronald Boucher.   The average single-family home as increased in value by $13,000, from  $222,151 to $235,243. Using the figures provided, the tax rate should drop from $15.35 per $1,000 assessed value to $13.58.   Last year's average single-family home bill was $3,410; this year's is estimated at $3,194, a nearly $200

Senior Chief Lester Connolly, seen above and at right, served in the Navy for 28 years as a flight engineer. He saw a flight of planes overhead at age 11 and was so struck by the sight it that he made a career out of flying. The Dorchester native served around the globe and spent many years in California before moving back to Massachusetts. Planet Fitness Donates 800 Pounds of Food to Combat Hunger in Western Mass

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — National Fitness Partners (NFP), a Planet Fitness franchise group operating 175 locations across 13 states, marked Giving Tuesday by donating 800 pounds of food to the Western Massachusetts Food Bank.    This contribution equates to approximately 800 meals for local families facing food insecurity.   The donation comes from six NFP locations in the region, supporting the Food Bank’s mission to end hunger through partnerships with farms, state and federal programs, and community organizations. WWII Soldier Coming Home Friday

Bernard Calvi NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A World War II hero will be returning to the Berkshires on Friday night, 82 years after he died as a prisoner of war in the Philippines.   Pvt. First Class Bernard Calvi's body will arrive from Hawaii on Friday and will be taken to Paciorek Funeral Home in Adams that evening.    A welcome home standout will take place on Hoosac Street in Adams beginning at 8 p.m. Calvi is set to arrive at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut at approximately 6:40 p.m. and arrive at Paciorek Funeral Home about 8:20.    Calvi had enlisted in the Army Air Forces in September 1940. Snow Advisory Called for Berkshires

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More snow is on the way for the region but it's anyone's guess how much we'll get.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has Southern Vermont is under a winter storm warning and the Berkshires a winter storm advisory.    Higher elevations could see up to 12 inches but the forecast for now is 6 to 8 inches by Friday.   Southern Vermont could see difficult travel with heavy snow and reduced visibility starting later Wednesday afternoon and through Thursday morning. Snowfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour within lake effect and upslope snow areas.   Travel could still be hazardous in Northern Berkshires

BRTA Awarded Grant to Expand Service Area

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) with the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) and Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA) were awarded a $1,577,607 Regional Transit Authority(RTA) grant to facilitate connections between the PVTA and FRTA service areas.   The grant will support commuter service between Pittsfield and Northampton, service between North Adams and Greenfield, and increased frequency on current service between Greenfield and Northampton, announced the Healey-Driscoll Administration in a press release Tuesday.   "Residents across our state rely on Regional Transit Authorities to get to work, school, the grocery

Tuesday marked the last time retiring Superintendent Barbara Malkas will present the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Certificate of Academic Excellence. To the Editor: I'm writing in regards to the Save Notch Forest signs that I have seen.

As a proud Masshole native from North Adams, that has transplanted to Southwest Vermont, I was curious as to what the signs were about.

I am grateful that I checked out the site on the sign to learn of the extensive and heinous logging plans of the Mass Audubon society near the North Adams reservoir.

As someone who travels back down to Mass sometimes daily and ventures to the reservoir 95 percent of that time for just the peace and beauty of being able to just sit there in awe.

North Adams Council OKs Union Wage Hikes

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council passed an updated fiscal 2025 classification and compensation plan with no debate at a special meeting on Monday.    The updated plan covers recent agreements with the firefighters, police and Department of public Works' unions and is retroactive to July 1.    The firefighters and police are getting about a 3 percent raise.    An entry-level firefighter will have a minimum starting wage of $46,574, up from $45,218, and Step 1 will start at $48,085.   A patrol officer at Step 1 will get $47,272, up from $45,031. Second shift will get an 8 percent differential ($48,633 at Step 1) and third a 9 percent
