 BOSTON — Bonita Oteri served her country for 17 years in the Army, retiring with the rank of major. In a military career that was built on the foundation of character, integrity, respect and humility, she served from 1979 to 1996. As a cadet at Northeastern University, her ROTC basic training was done at Fort Bragg, N.C. "It was a big culture shock as a Yankee going to the South ... truly made me appreciate my home in Massachusetts," she recalled. CLARKSBURG, Mass. — A number of egg scrambles were held in the Berkshires on Saturday ahead of Easter. The light spring ran didn't stop hundreds of children from darting across lawns and fields to search for treasure in the form of plastic eggs. Peter A. Cook VFW Post 9144 held its annual event at the town field named in memory of Cook, Clarskburg's only Vietnam War casualty.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Middle school students from around Region 1 displayed their science projects at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday. More than 50 projects showcased a wide range of topics students were interested to test and learn from, including how energy drinks affect your heart rate, wind energy efficiency, water filtering, and more. Hoosac Valley Middle School eighth-grader Dylan Clark-Slattery showed how music may affect a person's heart rate. He said he wanted to test this solution after his grandfather survived a heart attack.  STAMFORD, Vt. — The Stamford Community Library will host a presentation titled "Books, Buddhas, and Buns: Three Trips to China" on Thursday, April 24, at 6:00 p.m. The one-hour program will be presented by Stamford resident Caroline Burch. The presentation will recount her three trips to China, where she visited book printers as part of her work at Storey Publishing. Burch, who retired as the Production Director at the North Adams-based book publishing company after 36 years, traveled to China in the early 2000s to visit suppliers and experience the local culture. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced upcoming road work in West Stockbridge and North Adams. These projects may lead to traffic delays. West Stockbridge - I-90 Work MassDOT will conduct bridge painting operations on I-90 westbound at mile marker 1.3 in West Stockbridge from Tuesday, April 22nd, through Friday, April 25th. Work hours are scheduled daily from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, guardrail work will take place on I-90 eastbound between mile marker 1.0 and mile marker 3.0. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — As firefighters brought a structure fire on Pleasant Street under control, police were trying to pin down reports of a drive-by shooting near City Hall. Police are looking for a tan or gold sedan which had reportedly been at the intersection of State Street and Main when the passenger or driver fired out the window at another vehicle.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — One of Tourists' new model cabins was approved for construction on the Blackinton Mansion property this week. Tourists had pivoted to a cabin production facility in the Blackinton Mill when financing to transform it into a hotel fell through. The Planning Board approved permitting for the venture in January and the development of the "working" model on Monday. Partner Eric Kerns said the company's received more than 160 inquiries on cabins, signed up three buyers and is negotiating with six more.  CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The school budget would have to be sliced by up to $150,000 to bring the fiscal 2026 budget down to a 2 percent increase. It will mean cuts in personnel, professional development and programming. That's frustrated school officials who point out the operating budget is only going up by 0.67 percent but covering nearly $200,000 for retirees' insurance and FICA is pushing up the budget up to 7 percent. "What I heard last week is we were tasked with cutting our budget down to 2 percent or maybe 4 percent, I heard thrown out there, too," said Assistant Superintendent Tara Barnes at Thursday's School Committee meeting. 5 Comments

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Trump administration's cut $90 million in disaster prevention aid for the state including $144,000 for a culvert project on Galvin Road. The Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities grant program was providing funding to 18 communities, the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Engineering for the Galvin Road culvert was one of only two Berkshire projects being funded. The other was $81,720 to Hinsdale to power a public safety building.
