What should you know about RMDs?

You may spend many decades contributing to your IRA and 401(k), but eventually you will likely need to take the money out — in fact, you must take the money out or face penalties. What should you know about these mandatory withdrawals?

Here are some of the basics:

What are they called? Mandatory withdrawals are technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs. When must I take RMDs? If you were born before 1951, you've probably already begun taking RMDs. If you were born between 1951 and 1959, your RMD age is 73. And if you were born in 1960 or later, your RMD age is 75. You can postpone accepting your first RMD until April 1 of the year after

MCLA Hurt by Funding Formula

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is projecting reductions in state Department of Higher Education funding next year.    President James Birge informed the trustees at Thursday's meeting that this has to do with change to the funding formula used by the department.    "We will see about $140,000 less in revenue from that," he said. "We're trying to advocate with the state not to implement the change ... It's a difficult argument to make for us, but we are still trying to make it."   In response to questions from trustees, Birge said the larger institutions are benefitting from the formula change. Drury Grad Killed in Florida Crash

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A Drury High School graduate was killed in a motor vehicle crash over the weekend in the state of Florida.    Alison Felix, of Stamford, Vt., was a 2020 graduate of the high school and graduated this year from the University of Connecticut. She played basketball and soccer at Drury.   According to a message to the school community from North Adams' Superintendent of Schools Barbara Malkas, the district was notified that she was "tragically killed in a car collision while driving on the interstate in Florida."   It is not confirmed when or exactly where the accident occurred but NBC Miami Channel 6 reported a multivehicle crash

Leaking Clarksburg School Roof Becomes Priority

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The school roof has become a priority after the recent snow and rain has caused some significant leaks.    Principal Sandra Cote attended Monday's Select Board meeting after sending a video of a particularly bad leak to Chair Robert Norcross.    "We've had two other classrooms today that had sprung leaks that we hadn't typically had," she said. "We do have one that it seems to be getting worse, and I know we had a horrible rainstorm and the ice has backed up on the roof."   Cote said the custodian had been on the roof breaking up the ice, and it seemed the water may have been coming through an exhaust

McCann Tech Debuts New Look for Mascot, Gym

The new hornet mascot with the M and T incorporated into the look.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School has made some dramatic changes to its gym over the past few months.    A giant hornet peeks over the bleachers and a "jumbotron" calls out stats and cheers.    Superintendent James Brosnan took the School Committee to check out the new look after Thursday's meeting.   The colors are black and green and the school's hornet mascot now incorporates a stylized M and T for McCann Tech. Hoffmann Bird Club Hosts Annual Christmas Bird Count

North Adams Council Reappoints City Clerk

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday unanimously reappointed City Clerk Tina Leonesio for a three-year term to end in January 2028.   Council President Bryan Sapienza recommended her reappointment.   "I would not make this recommendation if I had not had full confidence in Clerk Leonesio," he said. North Adams Dunkin' Donuts Reopens with Community Donation

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dunkin' Donuts celebrated its reopening after undergoing a recent remodel by presenting the Al Nelson Friendship Center Food Pantry with a $3,000 donation.   "We are very thankful for Dunkin' Donuts for the very generous donation," the center's Board President Lois Daunis said Thursday morning after accepting the award. Man Sentenced to State Prison After 2022 North Adams Drug Offense

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nichols Melendez, 33 of Springfield, was sentenced in Berkshire Superior Court to seven to nine years in state prison.   On Monday, Dec. 2 Melendez pleaded guilty to six charges related to drug distribution and illegal firearm possession.   According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, On March 15, 2022, the North Adams Police Department executed a search warrant of 64 Charles Street, North Adams. The search was conducted based on previous investigation a suspected large-scale drug distribution involving Melendez.    There were four people in the Charles Street residence during the search including Melendez and Troy Dupras.
