SteepleCats Snap Skid

  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- For the first time since opening night, the North Adams SteepleCats Friday ended a baseball game on the right side of the scoreboard.   Julien Hernandez struck out nine hitters in five innings, and four North Adams pitchers combined to scatter eight hits in a 5-3 win over the division-leading Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at Joe Wolfe Field.   Nathan Lincoln went 3-for-3 and Kyle Hannon doubled twice for the SteepleCats (2-12), who snapped a 12-game losing streak.   Even though it had not won since June 7 -- at home, against the Blue Sox -- North Adams has been in games more often than not. SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Parker Rowland went 3-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs Thursday to lead Ocean State to a 7-6 win over the North Adams SteepleCats.   Drew Holderbach drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the 10th inning to hand North Adams its 12th straight loss.   Samuel Tackett went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Sam Sherman doubled for the SteepleCats.   North Adams (1-12) hosts the Valley Blue Sox on Friday night.

North Adams Hangar Renovation Likely to Begin This Month

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Stantec engineer Peter Enzien told the Airport Commission that building materials needed for the Northeast hangar renovation should be delivered this week.   Enzien said Tuesday that work can begin once the contractor has everything.   "They are still waiting on materials to arrive on site before they can remobilize," he said.    The city purchased the dilapidated hangar with hopes of restoring it, but the pandemic has delayed the project with material shortages and rising costs.   This anticipated start date is now June 26.   Enzien said structural work should take about six weeks. With warmer temperatures and high humidity this weekend, expect some thunderstorms.

Thursday, June 22 should be mostly pleasant with a high of 77. Sunshine will give way to clouds and some possible showers this afternoon, according to Accuweather.

Expect similar temperatures Friday but with more clouds. A light shower can be expected in the afternoon. Showers will continue on and off throughout the night. There is a chance scattered thunderstorms.

MCLA Receives $1M from the Executive Office of Health and Human Services

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) has awarded the Massachusetts College Of Liberal Arts (MCLA) $1M to fund the College's new Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) program.    The grant will support the first two years of the program by supplementing its curriculum development and funding the cost of a simulation lab coordinator; nursing journals, textbooks, and testing software; and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) fees.      MCLA's BSN program received approval from the Board of Registration in Nursing in January 2023 and approval from the Board of Higher Education in March 2023. Stratton, OPI Win Barn-Burner in Giorgi League

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Hunter Stratton scored 33 points Wednesday to lead OPI to a 107-101 win over Northern Berkshire Sports Academy in the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League.   Stratton also collected nine rebounds in the A Division win.   Scott McGuire scored 25 points, and Isaiah Powell just missed a double-double with 24 points and nine boards. Dalton Finance Approves Interdepartmental Transfers

DALTON, Mass. — The Finance Committee approved various interdepartmental transfers during its meeting last Wednesday.    It approved a transfer of $4,000 from the reserve fund to the Landfill Closure Monitoring account.    The original quote for the well repair did not include the cost of prevailing wages that the town is required to pay.    The engineer believed that the scope of the project did not require prevailing wage but after consulting town counsel, confirmed that it applies for well construction.    "They had supplied us with a quote in good faith and that was fine with me. North Adams School Building Committee Nixes New Brayton Option

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — One option for the proposed school project is now off the table.    The School Building Committee on Tuesday voted to eliminate the idea of a new building for Brayton Elementary School. It also discussed the process for deciding the grade structure for the project.   The committee had been presented with four building options back in April: an addition/renovation or new build at Brayton or Greylock.    "We are interested in focusing the options down to three, which we then can develop further and receive more detailed cost estimates relative to those options prior to selecting the preferred option," said Jesse Saylor of TSKP
