Ninth-Inning Home Run Trips Up SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Sanford scored two runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 2-1 win over North Adams in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Tuesday.   Jeremiah Jenkins hit a two-out, two-run home run to erase a one-run deficit for the Mainers.   Samuel Tackett had given the SteepleCats the lead with a solo home run in the sixth.   Dominick Marcoccio started for North Adams and went six innings, striking out seven and allowing three hits.   The SteepleCats (1-4) go to Newport on Wednesday.

North Adams Council Approved $47M Spending Plan for Fiscal 2024

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday approved a $47 million budget for fiscal 2024.   The spending plan at $47,410,070 is up $2,873,335, or 6.45 percent, over this year's budget. The increase is largely driven by higher costs for equipment and materials, investment in the police, fire and information technology lines, a nearly half-million hike in medical insurance costs, $223,911 more in the Hoosac Water Quality District assessment and $1.3 million more in educational costs.   The hike in the school budget, however, is being offset by a matching boost in state Chapter 70 education funds. North Adams Finance Approves Public Safety, Public Service Budgets

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Finance Committee last week voted to recommended the final line items for the city's proposed $$47,410,070 budget for fiscal 2024.   The City Council will vote on the spending plan on Tuesday.    The departments reviewed included public safety, for which Mayor Jennifer Macksey is requesting increases to ensure staffing for both police and fire. The Police Department is trying to keep a total of 30 officers on staff and the Fire Department is adding two more firefighters to reach 22 as well as five reserve firefighters.    The total budgets for each are $2.15 million for the Fire Department, up 4 percent, and $2.5 million for the

KEENE, N.H. -- Aidan Corn drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to give the Keene Swamp Bats a 9-8 win over North Adams on Saturday night.   Samuel Tackett homered twice and drove in three runs for North Adams, which also got a pair of hits from Benjamin Watson.   The SteepleCats took advantage of eight walks and three Keene errors.   North Adams (1-2) used five different pitchers. Nathaniel Chudy struck out six and allowed one hit and no runs in five innings of work.   The SteepleCats go to Bristol, Conn., on Sunday.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The North Shore Navigators took the lead with a four-run fourth inning and went on to a 10-6 win over the SteepleCats in NECBL action at Joe Wolfe Field on Thursday.   Evan Griffis and Brendan Jones each went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in the win.   Jason Shockley went 3-for-4, and Pittsfield's Sam Sherman was 2-for-4 for North Adams.   The SteepleCats (1-1) are off until Saturday when they head to Keene, N.H.

North Adams Building Owner to Be Charged With Arson in May Fire

Navom was reportedly arrested in Litchfield, N.H., and released on personal recognizance last week; McLenithan was set to be arraigned on Monday morning.    NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The owner of the apartment building that burned down on May 17 is expected to be charged with arson and conspiracy along with an alleged accomplice.   Police say Brandon Navom, 42, of State Road hired 19-year-old Gabriel McLenithan, a former tenant, to torch the condemned building that was insured for $1.2 million.    Two witnesses, including a woman who had had a relationship with McLenithan, say McLenithan had told them he started the fire for a $10,000 payment and an apartment

MassDEP Extends Air Quality Alert

BOSTON — The Department of Environmental Protection has extended a statewide air quality alert effective until midnight Thursday. The initial alert had been set to expire Wednesday night.    The hazy skies and acrid smell are coming from more than 400 forest fires in Canada. The haze has covered much of the Northeast and while the worst of the smoke is running through western and central New York State southeast to the Atlantic Coast, much of New England is feeling the effects.    The smoke is expected to impact the air quality of Western Mass on Wednesday.
