Senior Golf Series Returns in September

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire County Fall Senior Golf series returns in September with events on five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 18.   It is the 22nd year of the series, which is a fund-raiser for junior golf in the county, and it is open to players aged 50 and up.   The series will feature two divisions for each event based on the combined ages of the playing partners.   Golfers play from the white tees (or equivalent) with participants 70 and over or who have a handicap of more than 9 able to play from the forward tees.   Gross and net prices will be available in each division.   The cost is $55 per event and includes a round of golf, food and

Carpenter Leads Rams Past MCLA

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Mount Everett graduate Gwen Carpenter went 6-for-9 with a home run, a triple, three doubles and four RBIs Saturday to lead the Framingham State softball team to a double-header sweep of MCLA.   The Rams won by scores of 12-1 and 19-3 in a pair of games ended after five innings.   Hailey Peabody went 2-for-3 in each game for the Trailblazers.   MCLA (6-13, 0-4 MASCAC) is at Castleton State on Tuesday.

Lazits Leading Lions to First in Ivies

Taconic High School graduate and Columbia University junior Anton Lazits is hitting .253 for the Lions this spring.   Lazits has six home runs, five doubles and 13 RBIs in starting all 22 games for the Lions, who are 10-12 overall and 5-1 in the Ivy League heading into this weekend's games at Dartmouth.   He started the year with two home runs and four RBIs in Columbia's 15-6 loss at Florida on Feb. 23.   Saturday's 11:30 Columbia game against the Big Green is scheduled to be telecast on ESPN-plus.   Staying in the Ivies, Taconic graduatehas appeared in seven games at the University of Pennsylvania. Berkshire Adult Baseball League Welcomes Players for 13th Season

PITTSFIELD, Mass. –  As it enters its 13th season, the Berkshire Adult Baseball League has a new commissioner.   Jared Martin takes over the reins this spring from BABL founder Lou Orazio.   The league, which has games mostly on Sunday mornings with some weeknights throughout the season, runs from early May through mid-August in two divisions, the 20-and-over Division and the 33-and-over Division.   “The 20+ year old division is full of mostly competitive players, while the 33+ year old division is a more fun environment and less on the competitive side of things,” Martin said.   As of late March, the league has 13 teams lined up for the 2024

NAPLES, Fla. -- Hoosac Valley graduate Abby Bird drove in a pair of runs for MCLA Saturday in a 4-2 loss to St. Joseph of Connecticut.   MCLA's Lora Woyton went 5-2/3 innings in the circule, striking out five and allowing no runs.   Earlier in the day, MCLA dropped a 6-2 decision to Western Connecticut.   Ella Staffier went 2-for-3 with a double, and Sarah Williams went seven innings in the circle.   The Trailblaazers (0-2) plays Alfred State and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on Sunday.   Baseball SANFORD, Fla. -- Ty Mazzeo went 2-for-3 for MCLA in a 9-6 loss to Maine-Farmington.   MCLA (2-3) plays Webster on Monday.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass..— The MCLA Student Government Association’s 46th annual Sam Gomez Road Race will be held and around the campus of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Sunday, April 7.   With the help of loyal sponsors and runners, SGA has raised more than $30,000 for Berkshire-based organizations over the past two decades. Gittens Records Double-Double in MCLA's Season Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Aaron Nkrumah scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds Thursday to lead the Worcester State men's basketball team to a 76-52 win over MCLA in the MASCAC tournament.   Taconic High graduate and MCLA senior Quentin Gittens had 23 points, 13 rebounds and four assists -- all game highs -- in his final collegiate outing.   The Trailblazers finish the season with a record of 14-12.
