 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — There's a cat at No Paws Left Behind who is patiently waiting for his new family. iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home. Umo is a 4-year-old black domestic short hair. He has been at the shelter since March. Volunteer Debbie Melle said Umo can be a little nervous at first and hide but with patience would love to be your friend. "His biggest problem was he was a little sassy, and he's come a long way with treats and some long brushing," she said. Since he gets shy he might not fit into a home with children. North Adams Sees Races for Mayor, School Committee & City CouncilStaff Reports, 12:24PM / Wednesday, July 30, 2025 | | NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city will see races for mayor, City Council and School Committee in November. There will be no preliminary election. Tuesday was the deadline to submit nomination papers with signatures of at minimum 50 registered voters. Candidates do have until Aug. 14 to withdraw before the ballot is set. Jennifer Macksey is being challenged for a third term in the corner office by Scott Berglund. Both candidates took out papers in April; Macksey had hers back in 19 days while Berglund submitted his June 12. Richard David Greene took out papers on June 5 but did not return them. But this does not preclude the concurrent planning to remove the structure completely. Worth, hired earlier this year, has been dealing with dogs running loose and an owner of five animals who refuses to follow state law on licensing. She said there are two dogs running loose, one owned by occupants of a mobile home and another it runs with that lives a short distance away. The dogs are aggressive and she now has a report they are going after livestock. She said three people have reported being bitten.
