Three Berkshire Towns Get Internet Grants

BOSTON — Nine municipalities, including three in the Berkshires, are sharing $555,747 in grant funding to improve internet accessibility for residents.    The Municipal Digital Equity Implementation Program monies are through the Massachusetts Broadband Institute, part of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. This funding will support a broad range of activities across each community, including expanding digital literacy instruction, digital education and access, digital navigation services, laptop and tablet distribution and public wi-fi networks.   • Clarksburg is getting $64,677 to upgrade and expand public wi-fi at the community center and town park,

Millers, Tunnel City Freight Claim BABL Titles

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Brian Rodriguez Sunday struck out eight hitters in four innings to lead the G.B. Millers to a 3-1 win and a 2-0 championship series sweep over the Berkshire Thunder in the 20-and-over division of the Berkshire Adult Baseball League.   The Millers opened the series on Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Thunder at Memorial Field in Great Barrington.   In the league's 33-and-over division, Tunnel City Freight swept the Dalton Moneymakers over the weekend by scores of 15-5 and 14-2.   In the deciding game on Sunday at Joe Wolfe Field, Nolan Brassard went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to lead a 10-hit attack for Tunnel City.   Jonathan

NBT Bank Donates to North Adams Public School Book Initiative

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — NBT Bank awarded the North Adams Public Schools with a check of $1,000 to go towards the School 2025 Book Fair Initiative.   "[The money] will allow for pre-K through six students to have a $7 book voucher, and to some students, it means everything to pick out their very first book and be able to have a book that they can take home," said Carrie Burnett, the city's grants, special projects and procurement officer.   The district's goal is to raise $5,000 to help more than 715 low-income families with students in prekindergarten through sixth grade.   NBT Bank's North Adams branch manager Al Bedini Jr. gifted the check to

North County Squad Completes LaFesta Sweep

BOSTON — Mikey Durant went 3-for-3 on Sunday with a double to lead North Adams to an 11-7 win over the North End Dodgers in the final game of the LaFesta Baseball Exchange.   Durant scored four runs for the North County squad, which scored five times in the top of the sixth to takea  10-1 lead.   Landon Garner and Jayden-Wells Vidal each had a hit in a five-hit North Adams attack as it finished the summer 3-0 against its cross-commonwealth rival in the 34th edition of the exchange.   Garner, Maddox Cooke, Carson Dix and Cade Morrell each took a turn on the mound on Sunday morning, combining to strike out 10, walk three and allow three earned runs.   North

Fierro Leads North Berkshire Squad in LaFesta Exchange Win

North Adams Fire Sends One to Hospital

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— Firefighters battled a blaze at 319-321 Walnut St. in the early morning hours on Saturday.     At 3:21 a.m., the Fire and Police departments along with Northern Berkshire Emergency Medical Service responded to a structure fire at the multifamily home.    The blaze moved quickly through the two-story duplex and into the attic, causing extensive damage. Within minutes, it became an "all call" situation and Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Company was called in for its air truck.   Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre said the fire took nearly 45 minutes to get under control. All residents escaped injury, although one was transported to

Berkshires Creating with Crochet Coral Reef Project

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — More than a dozen people of all ages were crocheting colorful versions of coral out of yarn on Friday at the Berkshire Art Center's Gallery Shop on North Street. 

Their creations will become part of the worldwide Crochet Coral Reef Project, which has attracted thousands of participants from around the world. 

Williams College in Williamstown has been collaborating with community members and local organizations on artists Christine and Margaret Wertheims' international project that will become part of a life-size installation.

Bushika No-Hitter Helps Force Defend 10U County Title

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – McKinley Bushika struck out 12 Thursday to lead the Berkshire Force 10-and-under travel softball team to a 12-0 win over Northern Berkshire in the championship game of the Berkshire County summer league.   Bushika went the distance in the circle for the Force, which ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Sophia Tardibuono that brought home Mila Ostellino.   Bushika struck out six in a row at one point and did not allow a hit.   But she also dealt with runners on base in three of the game’s five innings, including the top of the first, when Northern Berkshire loaded the bases with one out before Bushika closed the door
