North Adams Starbucks Development Hits 'Pause' Button

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The corner of Union and Eagle streets will be bare for a while longer as construction hits pause on a retail development that is to include Starbucks.     "We are told, verbally, that the Starbucks project has been put on hold because they have new leadership, and the leadership is looking at all their existing stores before they continue with any new builds," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey at Tuesday's City Council meeting. Deadline Approaching for North Adams Election

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The deadline is fast approaching to get nomination papers in for the city election in November.    Papers with the signatures of 50 registered voters for mayor, City Council and city and McCann school committees are due by Tuesday, July 29, by 5 p.m. The city clerk's office will be open until 5 p.m. that day.    As of Wednesday, there are two candidates for the two-year term for mayor. Incumbent Jennifer Macksey, running for a third term, is being challenged by newcomer Scott Berglund. Both have submitted their papers and had their signatures certified. McCann Hopes Students Can Make ADA-Mandated Building Changes

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School wants to use a necessary renovation as a teachable moment for its students.   The Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School Committee on Tuesday authorized spending up to $300,000 to address 172 items that need to be addressed to make the school compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.   The corrections, which include thresholds without the proper clearance, updated signage and door closers that shut doors too quickly, came up in an audit related to the school's application for assistance under the Massachusetts School Building Authority's accelerated repair program.   Rather than hiring a contractor to

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Tristan Helmick threw six shutout innings Tuesday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to a 4-0 win over Upper Valley and a double-header split in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Robert Stang went 2-for-3 with a solo home run to lead North Adams' offense in the win. Taconic graduate Nick Guachione was 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run.   In the nightcap, Upper Valley won, 7-3.   Sean Stephenson homered and drove in a pair of runs in the loss.   North Adams (17-19) travels to face the Vermont Mountaineers on Wednesday.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Kieran Johnson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs Monday as the North Adams Post 125 Juniors beat Wilbraham, 14-2, in American Legion Baseball action at Joe Wolfe Field.   Emery Rotter and Lucas Hamilton each doubled in an eight-hit attack for North Adams.   Mason Fierro and Carson Dix split time on the mound, striking out seven in the five-inning win.   The Post 125 Juniors finish the regular season 11-7.

Second Chance Composting has Moved and Expanded

A new hopper and rotating screener has more than quadrupled the amount of material that can be processed in an hour. 

SAVOY, Mass. — Second Chance Composting recently expanded and relocated.

The composting company used to be in Cheshire but moved to 96 Main Road in Savoy in March.

"We're operating full scale out of here. So all the material, all the food scraps that we pick up and haul, we bring here, and then we mix them with material. So kind of the real big benefit to the community here is that this is a place where homeowners can bring their leaves for free," said owner John Pitroff.
