By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:37PM / Friday, November 15, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — School officials are pleased with the engagement they're seeing from the student population.    "I been talking to some other principals, and it's encouraging," Principal Justin Kratz told the School Committee on Thursday. "A lot of the other principals in Berkshire County and other parts of the state are all kind of saying the samet thing — the energy in the schools is coming back. That's encouraging and we're seeing it here too ... So COVID was tough but we're clawing our way out."   Kratz offered examples such as recent Swarm Club activities and the turnout and performances for the fall sports

Letter: Logging in the Notch Forest
Letter to the Editor,
01:55PM / Friday, November 15, 2024

To the Editor:

What does environmental justice mean? North Adams has been designated an environmental justice district. This is designed to give traditionally marginalized populations a voice in the political games that impact the well-being of their neighborhoods. When a recent editorial by Eagle columnist Lauren Stevens suggested that anti-logging protests in North Adams "had an edge to them" many residents were annoyed that anyone would expect otherwise.

Drive up Reservoir Road up from Route 8 and around the North Reservoir to Notch Road. Reservoir Road, below the reservoir, is rutted, full of potholes and has been decaying for years and is susceptible to mud flows and

North Adams Extends Outdoor Fire Restrictions
10:28AM / Friday, November 15, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— With outdoor fuel sources extremely dry and no meaningful precipitation expected, North Adams Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre and municipal leaders are extending restrictions on any outdoor fires at least until Friday, Nov. 22.   "This has been an unprecedented fall fire season in Massachusetts," said Chief Brent Lefebvre. "The current and expected weather conditions mean that any outdoor fire is likely to spread quickly and become difficult to control. In North Adams, those fires could easily spread to homes and other properties."   Burning yard waste is already prohibited across Massachusetts through January 15 and year- round in some

By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:42AM / Wednesday, November 13, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday voted to maintain the split tax shift, resulting in a drop in the residential and commercial tax rates.    However, higher property values also mean about a $222 higher tax bill.   The vote was unanimous with Councilor Deanna Morrow absent.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey recommended keeping a 1.715 shift to the commercial side, the same as last year. This sets the residential rate at $16.71 per $1,000 property valuation, down 43 cents, and the commercial/industrial to $35.22, down $1.12.   This is the lowest property tax rate since 2015, when it was $16.69.   "My job as the assessor is to assess based

DALTON, Mass. — The Open Space and Recreation Committee is looking for new members and developing ways to engage the community, especially in the neighborhood around the Pines Trailhead.    The seven-member committee has three vacancies and more members would allow it to be more efficient in managing the Pines as well as strengthen its efforts.    "It's a low time commitment, because we're not talking about a committee that meets three hours a week [and it is an] opportunity to be able to help out the community and try to improve resources that we already have," Chair Jared Shannon said at Thursday's meeting.   The committee was

Letter: Stop the Notch Reservoir logging project
Letter to the Editor,
04:00PM / Monday, November 11, 2024

To the Editor:

As a lifelong resident of the Berkshires and current MCLA student, I have come to possess a great fondness for the nature intertwined within our towns and cities. Even as a person who generally gravitates towards the indoor side of life, I believe we strike a fine balance between natural land and industry here in Western Massachusetts. One needs little more than to look around at wonderful mountain forests that surround us to realize the beauty at hand. It saddens me greatly, then, to see our governing bodies propose plans to disrupt this balance, and tear away our beautiful scenic views.

Currently, there is a proposed logging project that will target nature trails
