Storm Bringing Upwards of Foot of Snow Over the Region

Another storm moving through the region could mean up to a foot of snow over North Berkshire and the hilltowns through Monday.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., is forecasting anywhere from 2 to 8 inches across Berkshire County, eastern New York and Southern Vermont. Heavy bands of snow beginning around 4 p.m. are expected to drop 6 to 12 inches over Northern Berkshire.   Snowfall rates may reach a half inch up to one inch per hour at times this evening and tonight.   The NWS has issued a winter storm warning for Northern Berkshire and Southern Vermont and an advisory for Pittsfield south through Monday at 1 p.m.   Pittsfield declared a snow emergency

Adams Community Bank Donates to Local Nonprofits

ADAMS, Mass. — Adams Community Bank (ACB) ended 2022 with a donation of $75,000  to local food pantries, food banks, and fuel assistance programs.   ACB's Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Engagement Maureen Baran presented donations to several Berkshire County nonprofits.   Adams Community Bank began its December donation efforts by presenting BCAC's Fuel Assistance program with a $50,000 donation. This program is part of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded program to help low-income households with their energy costs. The program runs from Nov. 1 to April 30 each year and covers the cost of various

Adams' Mount Royal Inn Still Waiting on License

ADAMS, Mass. — After extensive debate of the issue at its last several meetings, the town is still waiting to approve an inn holder license for the Mount Royal Inn. 

 

The board is waiting on a final inspection for the motel after discussing it again on Wednesday. Building Commissioner Gerald Garner said the building had been vacated, pending that inspection.  

 

"Once I do my final inspection, I can sign off, and we'll be OK. Mr. Bokhari is working with me, I just have not received any calls for inspection," he said. 

 

Among the issues Garner said he still has to check is the building's smoke detectors, as well as the repair

1.5 Million Meals Donated to Food Banks from Big Y

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y's annual Sack Hunger campaign provides funds for the four food banks within their 2 state marketing area.    In turn, these food banks support local soup kitchens, food pantries, senior food programs, daycare centers and many others of the 2,100 member agencies that they help every day. Their goal is to maximize access to nutritious food and other resources that support food security for those at risk of hunger.   For $5, customers supported Sack Hunger at Big Y's 72 supermarkets or Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors. County First Responders Receive ASHER Training

More than 200 first responders attended Saturday's training. 

ADAMS, Mass. — Emergency responders and officials from across the county came to the former Memorial School building Saturday morning to participate in active shooter and hostile event response (ASHER) training.

More than 200 responders received training by Emergency Response Consultants in the last two weeks to prepare for the day's seven-hour session. Members of police, fire and ambulance agencies from North Adams, Adams, Williamstown, New Ashford, Savoy, Williams College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts were in attendance.

Worcester State Tops MCLA Women, Men

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Aaron Nkrumah scored 20 points Saturday to lead the Worcester State men's basketball team to a 76-56 win over MCLA.   Noah Yearlsey scored 11 points, and Mamadou Diallo had eight points and nine rebounds to lead MCLA (6-9, 2-3 MASCAC), which goes to Bridgewater State on Wednesday.   Women's Basketball NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Katie Hurynowicz scored 17 points to lead Worcester State to a 78-33 win over MCLA.   Ashlyn Bill came off the bench to score nine points and lead MCLA (3-14, 0-5), which goes to Bridgewater State on Wednesday.

2nd Street Secures Additional Office Space in North Adams

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 2nd Street, an organization supporting formerly incarcerated men and women in Berkshire County, has partnered with Community Legal Aid (CLA) to open additional office space in North Adams.    Located at 33 Main Street, North Adams, the office suite will be shared with CLA, which currently uses the space as a satellite office.   Beginning Feb. 1, 2023, 2nd Street will meet with clients by appointment only. Adams Officials Conflicted on Future of Coal and Grain Building

ADAMS, Mass. — The Board of Selectmen and town staff are conflicted on what to do with the coal and grain building off Columbia Street that will need significant funding for restoration.

 

Community Development Director Eammon Coughlin came before the board on Wednesday to discuss the cost associated with a restoration. He said design work for stabilizing the building at 1 Cook St. would cost about $100,000, and going through with a stabilization project would cost significantly more.

Lee Bank Foundation Distributes Final Grant Funding Round of 2022

LEE, Mass. — Lee Bank Foundation has awarded $45,670 to ten Berkshire area organizations for their fourth-round of 2022 community funding.   Recipients were awarded grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to support their local programming.
