American Legion Post 125 Honors the Four Chaplains

NORTH ADAMS Mass. — The Northern Berkshire veteran community acknowledged the "Four Chaplains," marking the 80th anniversary of their heroics and sacrifice during the sinking of the SS Dorchester during World War II.   Dozens gathered in the American Legion ON Sunday to pay tribute to the four Army chaplains who who died rescuing civilian and military personnel as SS Dorchester, an American troop ship, sank on Feb. 3, 1943   "This service is a tribute to those courageous chaplains and the 672 brave young men who lost their lives on that fateful night," said American Legion Post 125 Commander Mitchell Kiel. Clarksburg Elementary Working on Student Opportunity Act Plan

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Clarksburg Elementary School hopes to provide more student intervention with the district's Student Opportunity Act plan. 

 

Tara Barnes, director of pupil services for the Northern Berkshire School Union, spoke with the committee about the plan, which the department of elementary and secondary education requires each district to do. The goal is for districts to provide evidence-based programming for struggling student groups. 

 

"Ultimately, you have to approve the plan that we submit as a district in an official meeting. So I hope by the next meeting that we have a plan for you to review," she said.

Winterfest Seeking Participants for Chowder Cook-off and Artisan Market

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Tourism is bringing back a community favorite — the Chowder Cook-off — for this years Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 18.    Only two contestants had signed up for cook off when iBerkshires spoke with organizers last week: Italian restaurant Grazie and Clarksburg Elementary School. Mural Honoring Community Contributors Unveiled at North Adams Armory

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Well over a hundred people filled the basketball court at the Armory on Saturday to see the unveiling of a mural commissioned by the North Adams Youth Basketball League, honoring the history of the community and the building itself.

"This has morphed into something way bigger than the initial thought," said NAYBL board member Mark Moulton, who presented the finished mural to the crowd Saturday afternoon.

The mural honors six people whom Moulton said contributed to the league and youth sports in North Adams: state Rep. and former Mayor John Barrett III, Bernard "Bucky" Bullett, John Gaudreau, Caleb Jacobbe, Jim Shaker and Gene Wein. Local

Bricks Falling from North Adams Mill Causes Sidewalk Closure

A concrete pad was poured along the north side and steel struts put in place to stabilize the wall.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The sidewalk is once again closed on the south side of Union Street along the historic Hoosac Mill because of falling bricks.    The century-old mill had a catastrophic roof collapse more than a decade ago, caused by excessive snow load, and the interior had to be gutted and the walls fortified.    The nearly 200 yards of sidewalk was closed off for months and years at a time after the collapse and again several years ago as owner Ariel Sutain

Western Mass Gets $13M in Federal Funding

BOSTON — The state's federal representatives were able to secure $13 million in federal funding for Western Massachusetts in the end-of-year omnibus spending package.   U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, and U.S. Reps. Adams OKs Final $2.3M Borrowing for Wastewater Treatment Plant

ADAMS, Mass. — The Board of Selectmen has approved the final loan notes and other conditions for borrowing for the wastewater treatment plant project. 

 

The board's vote authorizes Treasurer/Collector Kelly Rice to work with bond counsel to issue loan documents. The loan is from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust, which the board approved $5.49 million of borrowing from for the project in November last year. 

 

Town Administrator Jay Green said another vote was necessary for borrowing the remaining funds. Town meeting gave the OK to the $5.49 million for the plant in 2021 and approved the additional funds in November.
