Hoosac, Wahconah Girls, Drury Boys Claim Western Mass Crowns

The Hoosac Valley and Wahconah girls basketball teams each came away with victories in all-Berkshire Couty finals on Western Mass tournament Championship Saturday

The day ended with the Drury boys giving Berkshire County a third championship on the day.

Hanna Shea scored 20 points Saturday to lead the Hurricanes to a 71-56 win over Lenox in the Class D final at Holyoke High School.    Down the road at Westfield High, Grace Wigington scored 23 to lead Wahconah past Pittsfield High, 61-49 in Class B.    The Taconic boys dropped their Class B final to Springfield International Charter, 57-51, despite 18 points from Tayvon Sandifer.    In the Class C hockey final,

John Olver, Champion for Rural Mass and Passenger Rail, Dies at 86

Healey has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings.   Olver represented the 1st Massachusetts District for 22 years until his retirement in 2012. Prior to that, he spent 22 years in the Legislature.   His successor and one-time colleague U.S. Rep. Clarksburg Officials Trying to Get Meetings Back in Town Hall

McCann Moves Forward With Designer for New HVAC Building

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann School Committee has hired Bradley Architects of Pittsfield to draw up the plans for a 5,600 square foot building that will house the new heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration program.    The committee last week approved the bid of $241,880.   The vocational school is the recipient of a $3.1 million state Skills Capital Grant to provide training HVAC. This will cover the construction of the building and the development of the program.    The recommendation was made by the facilities subcommittee, which reviewed three bid submissions. North Adams Pride Hosts First Northern Lights Ball

Two Sentenced On Drug Charges

PITTSFIELD, Mass.– Oasis Hason and Ahmed Shabazz were found guilty of possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute and sentenced to one to two years in state prison.  

On Thursday, Feb. 16 Hasan, age 25 of Yonkers, N.Y., and Shabazz, age 27 also of Yonkers, were both found guilty of Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Distribute. 

Both men were acquitted of charges relating to items found in a locked safe found inside the residence (Trafficking in Heroin (18-36 grams), Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, and 2 counts of Possession of Ammunition).

The defendants had been arrested

MCLA to Hold Annual Sam Gomez Race

NORTH ADAMS, MASS.— The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Student Government Association's (SGA) 45th annual Sam Gomez Road Race will again be a hybrid event this year, with an interactive virtual race that will be run from March 24 th through March 31 and the in-person event will be held on April 1.    This year's race will benefit Tapestry of North Adams.    Through the event, the SGA has raised over $30,000 for Berkshire-based organizations for almost 20 years.    Runners can register at mcla.edu/samgomez.
