Warmer Temperatures This Labor Day Weekend

It will actually feel like summer this weekend with temperatures in the 80s.   Today Thursday, Aug. 31 there will be sunshine with temperatures in the low 70s.   The same can be expected Friday but with warmer temperatures in the high 70s, reports AccuWeather.   Saturday, Sept. 2 will be partly sunny with temperatures in the low 80s.   Sunday will be mostly sunny and more humid with temperatures again in the low 80s.   Monday will be in the mid-80s with mostly sunny skies, and Tuesday is set to be even warmer with temperatures possibly breaking into the 90s.

Registration Open for Monument Cup 3-on-3 Soccer Tourney

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The 24th annual Monument Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament returns on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Monument Mountain Regional High School.   The event features boys and girls divisions in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups.   Teams of three to four players are guaranteed at least three matches. The top four teams in each division advance to the semifinals, with the championship matches played on the varsity field.   Teams are encouraged to wear their own handmade, creative uniforms.   Each division is limited to 16 teams. North Adams Tree Commission on Track for 2 Dozen Plantings This Year

Plans are to replace the dead tree on Main Street.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Tree Commission is getting things growing this year.    The commission was reinstituted a couple of years ago after many dormant years. But it had a quite bit of a turnover in commissioners so it's taken until 2023 to find its groove.    It planted 10 trees in late spring and early summer, including three at City Hall. North Adams School Officials Vote to Change Grade Configuration

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School  Committee on Tuesday voted with little discussion to change the school district's organization of instruction.    The school district will have a prekindergarten through Grade 2 early education program and a Grades 3-6 upper elementary program and a Grades 7 through 12 middle and high school level.   This was done in two votes as the organization of instruction had not been changed to reflect the move of the middle school to Drury High School nearly a decade ago.    Superintendent Barbara Malkas gave the same presentation provided last week to the Policy subcommittee, which voted to recommend the

Short-Term Rental Fees Advised in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The General Government Committee is recommending tiered annual fees for short-term rentals.   Owner-occupied buildings would be charged $200 for registration per unit and initial inspection and then $200 annually for inspection per unit.   All other buildings would be charged $350 per unit to register and $350 annually per unit for inspection.   Mayor Jennifer Macksey had suggested a $500 fee to cover costs last month but said it was a starting point. She wanted to get some kind of fee in place so Inspection Services could begin registering and inspecting as required by the new short-term rental ordinance finally approved in February.   The

Man Arrested in North Adams on Drug Trafficking Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Aug. 24, Antonio Laboy, 26 of Springfield, was arrested during a traffic stop by the North Adams Police Department involving two vehicles.    According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, the traffic stop was made on the grounds of an active investigation into drug trafficking in North County. The stops occurred on Church Street in North Adams, shortly after the vehicles crossed from Adams into North Adams. Laboy was a passenger in one of the vehicles at the time of the stop.    Laboy is an alleged drug trafficker who has been traveling back and forth to Berkshire County from Springfield Massachusetts. MCLA's LEAD Academy Expands with Support from Greylock Federal Credit Union

COVID-19 Cases Climbing

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — COVID-19 has been making a resurgence around the state.    There were more than 2,000 new cases in Massachusetts in the past seven days and University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester is mandating employees mask around patients after a jump in COVID-19 positive employees.   iBekshire stopped posting weekly updates on the virus back in March. That last post had the number of positives reported statewide that week as 2,612, a number that had continued to decline along with hospitalizations.    The state interactive dashboard shows higher positive numbers in the eastern part of the state, particularly Middlesex County.
