State Expected to Pick Up Some Education Costs for Family Shelter

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The school district's been in talks with the state over resources that may be needed for the proposed family shelter in the Berkshire Towers.    Superintendent Barbara Malkas told the School Committee on Tuesday that everything related to the shelter "is very much speculation."    "We don't have any set numbers of what to expect, we've been given some estimates," she said. "From what I understand, most of the children who would be coming with families are very young, so they may not actually even be coming into school."   The conversation was prompted by discussion of the budget and whether it

North Adams First Friday Focuses on 'Flower Power'

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— First Friday will be held on May 5 from 5-8 p.m. in downtown North Adams to celebrate the start of spring, floral outfits, and more.   The Flower Power-themed event will include sprucing up flower beds, creating a floral chalk mural, dance performances, live music, and downtown shops with special hours and events.   Eagle Street will be closed to car traffic for the evening, and activities and flower vendors will be available on the street.   Several downtown shops, galleries, restaurants, and the First Friday crew will be organizing events focused on spring.   Events: The First Baptist Youth Group and NAMAZING Initiative will lead a cleanup

Free Intro to Outdoor Skills Event for Girls

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Girls and their guardians are invited to a free Intro to Outdoor Skills event on Wednesday, May 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.    Girls can earn their first Girl Scout patch while learning basic campfire-building techniques, first aid, and jackknife safety.   The event will be held at the North Adams Public Library   This event is for girls entering K and 1 in the fall, who are not currently Girl Scouts. Natural Bridge to Undergo Redesign

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced that the agency will begin construction this spring at Natural Bridge State Park in North Adams as part of a redesign plan that will span several years.     The project is expected to begin this month and will take place over three phases with the initial work focusing on the removal of existing infrastructure, including structures on and over the chasm, to address safety concerns.    "I am most pleased that DCR is making this investment to supplement the earmark that I secured in last year's budget to revitalize and preserve this natural treasure,"

North Adams School Budget Increase Offset by Chapter 70

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The proposed school budget for fiscal 2024 is up $1.3 million over this year but the city's share will be level funded from this year at $3,838,270.   The budget was presented to the School Committee on Tuesday, following last week's review by the Finance and Facilities Committee.    The total budget draft is $20,054,352, a 6.91 percent increase over this year. The total increase is $1,296,564, exactly how much more the district is receiving in Chapter 70 state education aid. That aid totals $16,216,082 at the moment. (It's possible that figure may rise in the Senate's budget draft.)   Superintendent Barbara Malkas said last

Absentee Ballots Available for Clarksburg Town Election

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Absentee ballots for the town election to be held on May 30 are available at the town clerk's office.    You may vote in person Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon or request a ballot be mailed to you, by completing the form on the town website. Completed ballots may be mailed to or dropped off at the town clerk's office, 111 River Road, Clarksburg MA 01247.   The last day for absentee voting is Thursday, May 25, at 5 p.m.   Early voting ballots may be requested by completing the form on the town website and can be mailed or dropped off to the town clerk's office. Deadline to receive your request is May 22.

Another school year is coming to a close. And if you have young children, they're now a year closer to heading off to college or some other type of post-secondary education or training. So, if you haven't already done so, you may want to start preparing for these costs.   And they can be considerable. During the 2022-23 school year, the average estimated annual cost (tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation and other personal expenses) was nearly $28,000 for public four-year in-state schools and more than $57,000 for private nonprofit four-year schools, according to the College Board.   Of course, some students don't pay the full bill for college.
