Veteran Spotlight: Navy Seaman Herbert Putnam

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Herbert Putnam served his country in the Navy as a seaman from 1952 to 1956, separating from the service as a fireman, first class.    At 92 years old, he has a fabulous memory and a wonderful personality.    He grew up in Clarksburg, graduated from Drury High School, and did his basic training at Naval Training Center Bainbridge at Port Deposit, Md., in 1952.   "It was like going to high school, meeting a lot of different people," he remembered.   Seaman 3rd Class Putnam would be assigned to the USS Fessenden, docked in Rhode Island, and graduated from communications

Big Y Donates 1 Million Meals to Regional Food Banks

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Big Y's annual Sack Hunger campaign has provided funding for four regional food banks, resulting in the donation of 1 million meals to those in need.   The campaign supports local soup kitchens, food pantries, senior food programs, and other organizations that assist communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.   During the past holiday season, Big Y customers and employees contributed to the campaign through $5 donations, with each donation supplying 10 meals. Countywide Drug Raids Executed Friday

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office confirmed countywide drug raids were executed on Friday.    At least three occurred in North County — on Quaker Street and Howland Avenue in Adams and on Beaver Street in North Adams.    Julia Sabourin, spokesperson for the DA's office said, the office "in conjunction with multiple local and state law enforcement agencies executed a countywide operation to interrupt a large-scale narcotics trafficking ring."    The operation was the culmination of a multimonth-long investigation overseen by the DA's office and both narcotics and illegal firearms were sized during the

MCLA, Habitat for Humanity Partner for Sixth Year of Free Tax Assistance

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and its Department of Business Administration will once again partner with Habitat for Humanity to offer free tax preparation services to qualified residents through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program starting February 10.     Through the IRS's VITA program, MCLA students assist taxpayers by providing free tax preparation services. To qualify, most individuals and families must earn $67,000 or less, however, there is no income limit for those with disabilities, limited English-speaking skills, and individuals over the age of 60 with retirement or pension income.    Students

Get ready for another blast of snow Thursday and again on the weekend across the Berkshire region.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter weather advisory for Western Mass, Southern Vermont and eastern New York beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday through 6 p.m.    It will start out with snow but later turn to a sleety mix of rain and ice in the afternoon. North Adams School Committee Questions Future of Entitlement Grants

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Department is not expecting to lose its federal entitlement grants but cautioned they could decrease.    The public schools get about $740,000 in Title 1, 2 and 4 grants, down from about $1.3 million a decade ago. So there is the potential for more reductions, said Kimberlee Chappell, the district's literacy and title grant coordinator.   "I feel confident that we're going to continue to see funds coming in and that it's not going to significantly impact what we do in district," she told the School Committee on Tuesday. Clarksburg Opens Town Election Nominations

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Nomination papers for the annual town election are now available in the town clerk's office.   The offices up for election on May 13 are as follows:    One seat each on the Select Board, School Committee, Board of Library Trustees, Planning Board, Board of Health, War Memorial Committee and representative to the Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School Committee (McCann), and for moderator and tree warden. All have three-year terms.    There is also one opening on the Planning Board for three years to complete an unexpired term.   Interested candidates must stop by the town clerk's office to pick up nomination papers.

UPDATE: Suspect in North Adams Walmart Stabbing Turns Himself In

— A suspect in a stabbing at Walmart on Monday has turned himself in to police.

Interim Police Chief Mark Bailey reported that Roland Hernandez, 41, of Pittsfield, surrendered to the North Adams Police Department on Feb. 3, 2025, around 9 p.m. He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and was brought to Northern Berkshire District Court the following morning at approximately 10 a.m.

The incident occurred on Monday, Feb. 3, around 4 p.m. when officers responded to a fight at the department store and found a victim with stab wounds. The victim was transported by ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
