 To the Editor:
Like every other resident of North Adams, I was until very recently unaware of a sneaky logging plan for a patch of pristine public lands on the south side of Mount Greylock called Notch Woods. Excuse me, it's not a logging plan, it's a forest management plan, or is it a forest stewardship plan? Whatever obfuscating rhetoric you choose, the timber industry is about to rip 70 acres of iconic public land to shreds, and on that razed ground build back what might be their crowning achievement in euphemism, wait for it, a "climate resilient forest." You can almost hear the snickering timber industry executives. What we need instead is a forest seemingly

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council endorsed the Northern Tier Passenger Rail plan on Tuesday, adding to a chorus of support from officials and community leaders along the proposed route. "The completion of the Northern Tier Passenger Rail contributes to the economic development and emboldenment of communities throughout the state, allowing for North Adams to revitalize its tourism sector, create new avenues of revenue production and economic opportunities for all residents," the resolution introduced by President Bryan Sapienza and Councilor Andrew Fitch states. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will host a lecture by Dr. Derron Wallace, a renowned sociologist of race, ethnicity, and education. Wallace will present a book talk on his critically acclaimed work, "The Culture Trap: Ethnic Expectations and Unequal Schooling for Black Youth," on Monday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Murdock Hall, Room 218. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Residents are being asked to weigh in on the development of the town's first master plan. Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, through Senior Community Planner Seth Jenkins, is working to meet with town officials, boards/committees, and citizens to inform the plan. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The annual Up Front forDeMar 5K race and 1 mile walk will be held on Veterans Day, Sunday November 10, 2024. This annual event is to raise money for the SPC Michael R DeMarsico II scholarship fund and to honor DeMarsico and all who serve and have served. According to a press release: SPC DeMarsico was killed in action on Aug. 16, 2012 while serving in Afghanistan.  Monument Mountain alum Erving Henderson is making an impact in his first year on the Springfield College men's soccer team. Henderson scored a pair of goals in the Pride's 3-1 win over Worcester State on Oct. 8. He has appeared in 11 games this season, collecting those two goals and an assist, and he has started once for the Pride. Springfield College (5-6-2) hosts Wheaton College on Saturday. He toured McCann after a morning event at the Basketball Hall of Fame and stopped at Clarksburg School before heading east. CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board is leery of pooling its money from the opioid settlement with other communities. Clarksburg, one of the first communities to sign on to the opioid lawsuit filed by a consortium of states several years ago, has so far received payouts of $23,594.78. It's expected to receive nearly $64,000 by the end of the 16-year payout. Board members on Monday discussed the pros and cons of dropping the town's anticipated funds into a much larger pot. Local Man Scammed Out of $420KStaff Reports, iBerkshires

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A local man was scammed out of $420,000 by someone claiming to be a T-man online. The scammer, who represented himself to the victim as "Sam Wilson, a U.S. Treasury agent," is still at large but one of his alleged conspirators was arrested by the FBI on Oct. 7. Urvishkumar Patel, 21, of South Boston, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud in U.S. District Court in Springfield. Patel was allegedly acting as a courier in picking up packages of cash from the victim. The 75-year-old victim, who was not identified by name, was told by Wilson that his name had come up in an investigation. He was 11 Comments
