MCLA Exploring Using Berkshire Towers As Homeless Shelter

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) may partner with the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to turn the Berkshire Towers dorms into homeless housing.   MCLA President James Birge released a letter to college alumni Thursday that outlined the college's plan to provide shelter to families without secure housing.    He stated in the letter that the news has already been shared with students.   "I want to assure you that our priority is to maintain the health and safety of our students," he wrote. nbCC selected as a Big Y Community Bag Program Beneficiary

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The  Northern Berkshire Community Coalition (nbCC) has been selected as a beneficiary of the Big Y Community Bag Program  for the month of April.   The Big Y Community Bag Program, which launched in January 2019, is a reusable bag program that facilitates community support.   Northern Berkshire Community Coalition was selected as the April beneficiary of the program by store leadership at the Big Y located at North Adams. Clarksburg Hears Pitch From Water District, Mulls Zoning Edits

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Briggsville Water District is hoping to have the town lien delinquent water bills to property taxes.    "We do that routinely for North Adams," said Carl McKinney, town administrator, who spoke to the Select Board on Wednesday as a member of the district's board of commissioners. "We have a contract that is part of our water agreement with North Adams but we don't have an agreement with the Briggsville Water District."   The commissioners wanted to know if the board was amenable to entering into an agreement with the water district, he said.     The town has the ability to legally put liens on properties

North Adams Airport Hangar Project Price Increase

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Airport Commission will see a $163,000 increase to the North East Hangar renovation project.    Engineer Peter Enzien gave his report to the commission Tuesday and noted that the hangar project will be a little more costly than originally anticipated with a new estimate of $642,000.   "I think we need a new estimator," Commissioner William Diamond said. "That is what I think."   Originally the rehabilitation of the city-owned hangar at Harriman & West Airport was estimated to cost $350,000. But the original bid actually came in at $479,000.   Enzien said the general contractor has offered their actual quote now

Nomination Papers Available in Clarksburg

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Nomination papers are available in the town clerk's office for the annual town election on May 30.    Up for election this year are one-year terms for moderator, tree warden, and Planning Board; three-year terms for Select Board, School Committee, library trustee, Board of Health and War Memorial Committee; and a five-year term on the Planning Board.    Papers can be picked up from the town clerk's office Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon; they must be returned by Thursday, April 6.   Contact the town clerk at 413-663-8255 or townclerk@clarksburgma.gov with any questions.

Structurally Deficient Brown Street Bridge Closed in North Adams

The bridge was built  in 1952 over the Hoosic River.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The state has ordered the Brown Street bridge closed.    Residents were alerted the closure of the span that connects River Street to West Main Street by the city's CodeRed alert system around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The bridge is closed "indefinitely."   The bridge is blocked off on both sides though Brown Street is still accessible from West Main Street.    The 26-foot steel structure's poor condition is well known and it was listed with 19 other bridges in the Berkshires requiring repairs or replacement using funding from the federal Bipartisan

MCLA Announces Nursing Bachelor's Degree Program

North Adams Commission Passes on River Street Parking Ban
