Pedestrian On Moped Hit on Mass Ave

Northern Berkshire Veterans Services Veterans' Picnic

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Northern Berkshire Veterans Services has announced plans to host a Veterans' Picnic on Friday, June 21, from noon to 4 p.m.
The event will take place at the Greylock Club Pavilion, located at 548 State Road in North Adams.
An assortment of sandwiches and salads will be served. There will also be desserts and beverages.
Additionally, there will be gift basket raffles and a door prize.

SteepleCats Fall in Extra Innings on Road

HOLYOKE, Mass. -- The Valley Blue Sox Wednesday scored four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn a 6-5 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Caden Dulin and Elijah Lambros each homered for North Adams, which scored three times in the top of the 10th.   Tyler McKinstry got the start on the mound for the SteepleCats and held the Blue Sox scoreless for 4 and one third innings.   North Adams (1-5) is home on Friday against Martha's Vineyard.

Students Through Saturday Register Free for Pittsfield July 4 5K

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Students in grades kindergarten through 12 can register free for the BHS July 4th 5K through Saturday, June 15.   The 5-kilometer road race takes place on the parade route of Pittsfield's Independence Day parade at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.   Berkshire Health Systems is offering prize money to the top 3 overall category winners in nine age groups.   There will be a Corporate Challenge Division in which businesses can compete in this special category while supporting the race. Sponsorships are needed and welcomed by contacting Lisa Lewis at llewis3@bhs1.org   Proceeds will go to support community wellness programming through Berkshire Health

North Adams Council OKs $49M Budget for Fiscal 2025

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday approved a $48,891,455 fiscal 2025 budget, up $1,481,385 or 3.12 percent over this year.    The budget includes a school budget of $20,357,096, up $302,744 or 1.51 percent over this year.    The major drivers are the general increases in the cost of supplies, utilities and insurance; a 2 percent cost of living raise for nonunion employees; upgrades in software and equipment; reclassifications of several positions and additional clerical staff.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey provided the city budget, school budget, compensation and classification plan and capital improvement plan in a bound document with

McCann Tech Hires New Football Coach

NORTH ADAMS,  Mass. — McCann Technical School announced that they have appointed new football Jon Rochelo.
"As a former player of mine in high school, basketball, I'm excited to see Jon returning to the school in a coaching role," said Principal Justin Kratz. "I think he's got the right mindset and perspective to work well with our players and am really looking forward to seeing him on the sidelines.  I know he's invested in the school and seeing the program succeed."

MountainOne Donates $10K to Berkshire Community Action Council

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — MountainOne announced that it has donated $10,000 to the Berkshire Community Action Council (BCAC) as part of its 2024 Community Dividend Program.
The BCAC is a non-profit human service organization that assists low-income residents of Berkshire County towards achieving sustainability and self-sufficiency. Working with the community to find solutions that promote economic stability and alleviate the destabilizing effects of poverty for those in Berkshire County, the BCAC has had "self-sufficiency and dignity for all" as its vision since incorporating in 1966.

North Adams Planners OK Starbucks Development on Problem Corner

Peter LaPointe of Colvest Group reviews aspects of the development plan at Monday's Planning Board hearing.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Planning Board on Monday approved a multi-tenant redevelopment of the former St. Francis property that will include a long-rumored Starbucks.   The special permit includes the site plan, a variance to the 35-foot setback and, as a condition, the addition of curbing to restrict driveway access on Eagle Street to right-turns only.   Colvest Group of Springfield plans to construct three buildings with four to six retail spaces, two drive-throughs and parking for 57 vehicles at the corner of Union and Eagle

Berkshire Fire Departments Awarded Fire Safety Grants

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The state awarded Pittsfield, North Adams, and Lanesborough Fire Safety Grants to support fire and life safety education for school-age children and older adults.
Since 1995, the Department of Fire Services' Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) grant program has supported firefighter-educators who deliver age-appropriate fire safety education to kids and teens across Massachusetts. In that time, the number of children who die in fires has dropped to historically low levels, from two dozen or more per year to zero for nearly three consecutive years.

Misfits, Saboteurs Win NBSA Spring Titles

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Quentin Gittens scored 36 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Misfits to the championship of the Northern Berkshire Sports Academy Spring League's A Division.   Carter Mungin scored 17 points, and Tayvon Sandifer and Deonte Sandifer each had a double-double in the title game win.   The Misfits qualified for the league playoffs as the No. 4 seed and knocked off the regular season's top squad to reach the title game.   The Saboteurs also qualified as the four seed for the tournament in the B Division. North Adams Schools Awarded Literacy Grant

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Public Schools received a $8,652 state grant to implement Appleseeds, a package of materials for teaching foundational reading skills in kindergarten through second grade.
While Appleseeds is free for download to all Massachusetts school districts, the grant will fund professional printing of the materials, plus professional development for educators.
Appleseeds is a free, evidence-based reading foundational skills program for students in grades K-2. Districts can use it to supplement existing curriculum that does not have a strong foundational skill component.

SteepleCats Earn First Win of Season

DANBURY, Conn. -- Caden Dulin doubled twice, and Elijah Lambros homered Saturday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to their first win of the season, a 10-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Warren Holzemer and Joey Pagano each had a pair of hits in an eight-hit attack for North Adams.   The SteepleCats (1-1) used five different pitchers in the game.   Starter Tanner Duke struck out four and allowed one run in four innings of work. Jerome Manarchuck picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.   North Adams is scheduled to host Ocean State on Sunday afternoon at 4 at Joe Wolfe Field.
