North Shore Navs Edge SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Matthew Chatelle went 3-for-4 with three doubles Sunday to lead the North Shore Navigators to a 4-2 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   David McCann hit a solo home run and drove in both runs for the SteepleCats.   Pittsfield High graduate Cam Sime was tagged with the loss for North Adams, allowing two runs in three innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.   North Adams (11-13) is at Martha’s Vineyard on Monday.

Veteran Spotlight: Coast Guard Lt. Joseph Ponti

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Joseph Ponti served his country in the Coast Guard from 1961 to 1965, and was discharged as a lieutenant.    He grew up in Lawrence and graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as an ensign. His first assignment would take him aboard a weather ship, the USCG Casco.    "We went on five-week patrols, carried meteorologists onboard and did search and rescue missions," he recalled.   His other roles would include 1 1/2 years as a deck watch officer, six months as a student engineer as well as an engineering watch officer. Mainers Pull Away Late in Pitching Duel at Joe Wolfe

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Sanford Mainers Thursday rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning and went on to a 4-1 win over the North Adams SteepleCats at Joe Wolfe Field.   Two of those runs were due to an outfield error, one of three miscues in the game, on a night when the 'Cats got stellar pitching from Tyler McKinstry and three relievers.   "That was definitely one of the better performances by the pitchers, collectively, really all summer," North Adams manager Ryan Abel said. SteepleCats Fall to Nighthawks in Vermont

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Tommy Kent struck out eight and allowed two runs in five innings Wednesday to lead the Upper Valley Nighthawks to a 5-3 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Daniel Perron Jr. went 2-for-2 with a double for the SteepleCats, who also got doubles from Jake Kulkowski and Aeden Anderson.   Jayder Raifstanger and Sam Sherman each had a hit for the SteepleCats.   North Adams (9-12) looks to snap a two-game skid on Thursday when it plays its annual Independence Day game at Joe Wolfe Field against Sanford, Maine.   Game time is 5:30 p.m. with fireworks following the game.

Lazits Leads Team Past SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Taconic High School graduate Anton Lazits went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI Tuesday to lead the Bristol, Conn., Blues to 7-3 win over the North Adams SteepleCats.   Warren Holzemer went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for North Adams, which got two hits apiece from Max Palinski and Luke Mistone.   The SteepleCats (9-11) go to Vermont to face the Upper Valley Nighthawks on Wednesday.

North Adams Man Charged with Murder in 2017 Stabbing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man has been charged with murder after the death of a man he stabbed seven years ago.    Travis T. Perras, 31, was indicted last week on a charge of first degree murder in the death of Charles Sauer of North Adams. He entered a plea of not guilty before Judge John Agostini on Thursday and was ordered held without bail.    Perras pleaded guilty in 2018 of stabbing Sauer, then 51, the year before.    Sauer worked for Domino's Pizza in North Adams and was delivering a pizza to a Union Street address called in by Perras on the night of July 14, 2017, when he was attacked and stabbed multiple times in an attempted robbery.

All Saints Episcopal Church Tour and Concert

Berkshires Gets $600K in Bike Path Grants

ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshires received more than $600,000 for improvements and planning of recreational trails.    The funds are part of some $12 million in awards announced recently for 65 projects across the state by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation's MassTrails program.   "At DCR, we witness firsthand how trails connect communities across Massachusetts, providing essential opportunities for outdoor recreation, tourism, and economic growth," said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo in announcing the grants in Holliston on June 21. BAAMS To Host Randy Brecker at Studio 9
