Zebra Mussel eDNA Detection in Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Zebra mussel eDNA has been detected at Onota Lake by the Commonwealth's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).    This discovery was made as part of regular monitoring of the lake for these types of invasive species. This detection only impacts boating operations at the lake and has no impact to other recreational uses of the lake.   Zebra mussels are invasive freshwater mollusks that present a variety of ecological, recreational, and economic concerns. In 2009, zebra mussels were detected in Laurel Lake and its outflow in the Housatonic River in Lee/Lenox. Since that time, the City of Pittsfield has actively worked with DCR to

MCLA Men's Hockey Gets Home Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Landry Laird made 32 saves Tuesday to backstop the MCLA men's hockey team to a 5-1 win over Western New England.   Sean Schifferl, Luke Rhoss and Addam Brunner each had a goal and an assist for the Trailblazers (2-4-1), who go to Rutland, Vt., to play Castleton State on Friday.   Women's Hockey HARRISVILLE, R.I. -- Grace Wiggett scored early in the third period to give Nicholls a 2-1 win over MCLA.   Abby Pomajba scored a power play goal for the Trailblazers (2-7) who travel to play New England College on Dec. 1.

Snow, Sleet, Ice in the Forecast

The North Berkshires and Southern Vermont could see some snow overnight but probably not enough to take a sleigh to grandmother's house.    A winter weather advisory has been issued through 10 a.m. on Wednesday by the National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., for North Berkshire and the Vermont counties of Bennington and Windham.    Snow will move in later Tuesday evening and mix with sleet and freezing rain prior to midnight. The snow, sleet and freezing rain will change to plain rain during the late-night hours and diminish prior to noontime on Wednesday.   The forecast is for gusts of up to 40 mph and 2 to 5 inches of snow, with the higher accumulations in

First Congregational Church of Williamstown donated 60 pies.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — It was Thanksgiving on Monday at the Berkshire Food Project.    The free lunch program has for three decades made a point of ensuring anyone can get a turkey dinner with all trimmings — albeit a few days before the holiday.    "It's wonderful," said Arnold Hynes, sitting with friends in the dining room at First Congregational Church. MCLA Hosts Celebration of Life for Steve Green

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — MCLA and the Green Family will host a celebration of life for professor Stephen A. "Steve" Green at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, in MCLA's Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium and via Zoom.    Green, a community leader, passed away in September.   Green accomplished a 36-year career at the former North Adams State College (now MCLA). Stamford Burglary Suspect Caught on Video

An image of the suspect taken from security footage.  STAMFORD, Vt. — State Police are seeking information on a theft from Stamford School early Friday.    An individual wearing all black, a winter hat and facemask took off with a small safe containing money from the main office.    The entrance set off an alarm and troopers arrived shortly after midnight on Friday morning. Plant Connector Pop-up Opens in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — North County business owners Emilee Yawn and Bonnie Marks brought their community-loving plant shop, Plant Connector, to Central County.    The pop-up shop, located at 64 North St., will be open until Dec. 31. North Adams Council Passes Taxi Ordinance

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council passed the long-awaited taxi to a second reading on Tuesday.    The council made short work of a number of lingering items on the agenda through postponement and wrapped up in just under 45 minutes.    The creation of a hospital overlay district was approved with little discussion. Williams College Finds Indoor Facilities for Athletes in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Williams College is looking eastward for athletic facilities with the closure of the Towne Field House.   The Planning Board on Monday approved a change-of-use application for a unit at 69 Union St. to operate a fitness facility. North Adams Hotel Approved for Alcohol License

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The License Commission on Tuesday approved Hotel Downstreet for an all-alcohol license.   Innkeeper Tyler Carroll, representing NA Hotel LLC, said the hotel would sell bottles and cans for consumption within the hotel.    "What we're going be doing is retail down below, which will be sold as a whole bottle of wine or premixed cocktail, the idea would be to serve those type of items," he said.
