Sweet 16: Raumunto's Goes Undefeated, Wins League Title

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Northern Berkshire Youth Baseball League champions Saturday gave out two game balls after the title game.   One to the starting pitcher who threw 86 pitches in 5 and a third innings, striking out six and retiring the side in order three times.   And one to the guy who needed just one pitch to get the last two outs and earn the save.   Landon Garner nearly went the distance on the hill but welcomed an assist from Benny Tatro in a 7-4 win over Rotary that gave Ramunto’s Pizza a 16-0 record and an NYBYL Championship on Fallon Field.   Tatro also had a two-run single in a five-hit attack for Ramunto’s, which used a couple of web

Blue Sox Hold Off SteepleCats in Ninth

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The North Adams SteepleCats scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Valley Blue Sox held on for a 7-5 win at Joe Wolfe Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Friday.   Andrew Estrella went 2-for-5 with a home run and a double in an 11-hit attack for the visitors.   Darin Kuskie struck out four and allowed one run in five innings of work to earn the win on the mound.   For the SteepleCats, Monument Mountain graduate Jayder Raifstanger and Mount Greylock grad Derek Paris each doubled and drove in a run.   Taconic alum Sam Sherman went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for North Adams.   And Pittsfield High grad Cam

Drury High's Myers Named North Adams Teacher of the Year

Donna Myers started at Drury as a student teacher before joining the history department full time in 1998. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury High school year culminated on June 7 with an end-of-the-semester showcase, the presentation awards and the naming of this year's Marion B. Kelley Teacher of the Year.   Donna Myers, sitting in the front row of the auditorium, was shocked when her named was called to applause and cheers.   Superintendent Barbara Malkas described her as the epitome of the Teacher of the Year award, named for the principal of the former Sarah Haskins and Johnson schools who worked in the public schools for a total of 40 years (with a nine-year gap

Greylock Thunder Competes in Connecticut Tournament

WINDSOR, Conn. -- Marlee Arnhold struck out 11 in five innings of work and allowed one earned run in a 4-2 loss for the Greylock Thunder 14-and-under softball team on Friday.   The Thunder took the setback against the Vermont Storm in its first game at the Fastpitch Nation Cup.   Sadie Stuebner went 1-for-1 at the plate and drove in both Greylock runs in the loss.   In the Thunder's second game at the tournament, it dropped an 8-0 deccision to the New Canaan, Conn., Rams.   Gianna Witek went the distance in the circle. Berkshire Youth Soccer Holds Season-Ending Tournament

LENOX, Mass. -- Eight teams earned championships last weekend in the finals of the Berkshire County Youth Soccer League spring season.   Teams of boys and girls in grades 5-6 and 7-8 participated in the season-ending tournament, organized by Donna Laroque and Nigel Gayle and hosted mostly at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School.   One squad, the Williamstown Wildcats 12-and-under girls, is extending its season with a trip to this weekend's Massachusetts Tournament of Champions in Lancaster.   Teams winning Berkshire County league titles on June 15 included:   Under-12 Boys B Cup Final: GYAA 2, Williamstown Soccer Club 1 Girls B Cup Final: GYAA 2, Pittsfield Soccer

BRPC Developing Action Plan for Safer Roads, Crosswalks

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A countywide effort is developing a systematic approach to roadway safety for motorists and pedestrians.    Three public sessions were planned with the third is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Great Barrington firehouse on State Road. NBCC Celebrating Community at Adams Event

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition is venturing south to hold its annual meeting in Adams for the first time.    The Adams Theater, reopened and under renovation, will be the site of the 38th annual meeting on Friday, June 28, from 11:30 to 1:30.    Executive Director Amber Besaw sees it as a way to demonstrate that the coalition is really about all of Northern Berkshires.    "We're sort of trying to make sure that people know we serve the whole region by not only having them in North Adams," she said.    NBCC held its annual gatherings at the old Williams Inn, as did so many other organizations, then

'Striking Out Cancer' Event Returns June 29 in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Four years in and still swinging for the fences, the Striking out Cancer in the Berkshires fund-raiser returns on Saturday, June 29, at Clapp Park.   The all-day baseball and women’s softball games are the brainchild of city resident Joe DiCicco, who conceived the event as a way to raise money to support the Jimmy Fund for cancer research and patient care at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.   For $10, any player of any ability is welcome to join in the fun. Vermont Mountaineers Edge SteepleCats

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont Mountaineers collected five extra-base hits and 16 hits overall Wednesday to earn a 9-8 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball Leage action.   David McCann went 3-for-5 with a home run, a pair doubles and a pair of RBIs to lead North Adams, which finished with 12 hits.   Max Palinski went 3-for-4, and Antonio Morales and Aeden Anderson each doubled for the 'Cats.   Four different North Adams pitchers split time on the hill, striking out nine.   The SteepleCats (5-6) are home on Friday evening at Joe Wolfe Field against the Valley Blue Sox.

Kids 4 Harmony Returns to Ozawa Hall

LENOX, Mass. — 18 Degrees will host their Kids 4 Harmony Summer Gala Concert on June 25, 5:30 PM, at Seiji Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood.
