PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man was convicted Friday of murdering his wife, Charli Gould Cook, in 2019. A Berkshire Superior Court jury found Michael Cook Sr., 47, guilty of murder in the second degree, assault and armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery on a family or household member. Cook had broken into the Chase Avenue home of his estranged wife on July 11, 2019. The 41-year-old woman was in her bed when Cook hit on the back side of her head with a hammer. The assault resulted in significant injury to her skull causing traumatic brain injury. 0 Comments

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Proponents and opponents have been busy on social media and mailers in getting out their messages on which way to vote on the Greylock School project. Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to decide a debt exclusion for borrowing on the $65 million project that will include the demolition of the 70-year-old current Greylock School. The city will be responsible for just under $20 million over the next 30 years. School officials have held a number of informational forums at both Brayton and Greylock schools and at smaller venues. I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed logging project at the Notch Reservoir in North Adams, a key source of our city's drinking water. While the city has released minimal details regarding this project, what has been shared raises significant concerns about both the environmental and community impact. After attending the Conservation Commission meeting on Oct. 3, it is clear that both the commission and the community feel ill-prepared to assess the project and its potential impacts on the surrounding wetlands.  To the Editor:
It was brought to my attention that a claim I referenced in my previous letter to the editor was not accurate in my representation of it. However innocuous my intention was, it still mischaracterized the arguments that were made regarding the number of studies utilized. And, beyond that, I realized making the case for the school using the quotes of others was unnecessary. There are a plethora of good faith and factual reasons to support the school project, and I will continue to work with those at the forefront.
Reflecting on my own experiences in the North Adams Public School system, it's easy to reminisce about my time at Greylock Elementary over a decade ago.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The new owners of Meng's Pan-Asian are being ordered to get recertified on food safety standards after city inspectors found violations at the Main Street restaurant. Code Enforcement Officer Heather DeMarsico asked the Board of Health on Wednesday to require them to retake the ServSafe training and tests.
