Berkshire Communities Awarded Recycling, Waste Reduction Grants

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced more than $4 million in Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) grants to 285 municipalities and regional solid waste districts, that will help communities maximize their recycling, composting and waste reduction programs.   "Every day, communities across Massachusetts are taking important steps towards environmental protection and sustainability through waste reduction," said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Thousands of articles have been posted on iBerkshires over the last year and some drew more eyeballs than others.    Normally our top 10 stories range across the year but the flood of breaking news in the last few weeks has pushed some of the most recent articles to the top.    Our top story is the scamming of a North Adams man to the tune of $420,000. Posted in October, it has been viewed more than 115,000 times.   Based on a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the article described how the older man was tricked into handing over wads of cash to a fake Treasury agent for "safekeeping."    One of the

Clarksburg Offers Town Administrator Post to Boucher

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted to offer the position of town administrator to Ronald Boucher, pending contract negotiations.    "I think Ron's the best option, the safest option to move forward," said board member Colton Andrews.   Boucher is a former Select Board chair, town moderator and Finance Committee member and current member of the Planning Board. He's currently a regional sales manager for global EcoLab. He was notified during the meeting and agreed to meet with the board on his contract Friday morning.    Should he accept the post, he will replace Carl McKinney; the board declined to renew his contract and his

NBSU OKs Administrator Contracts

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Northern Berkshire School Union Committee approved three-year contracts for two administrators and made plans for the departure of a third.    The committee at its Thursday meeting, held virtually, voted the contracts for Assistant Superintendent Tara Barnes and Director of Information Technology Josh Arico.    Business Administrator Lisa Blackmer gave her 90-day notice two weeks ago with final date of March 14. Her two-year contract was approved in December 2023.   Both Arico and Barnes were applauded for their work and given everything they requested.    Barnes will receive a 3 percent raise in each of the next three years,

MountainOne Spreads Holiday Cheer with Berkshire Food Project

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — MountainOne sponsored and partnered with Berkshire Food Project for a festive Morning with Santa and Mrs. Claus in North Adams.    MountainOne's Mountaineers, along with Mo the Spokesgoat, distributed signed copies of the bank's storybook, "How to Climb a Mountain."    According to a press release, the storybook teaches positive life lessons, promotes literacy, and introduces financial education to MountainOne's youngest customers and community members.   Participants also received an activity packet filled with coloring pages and fun financial literacy activities for kids.

Veteran Spotlight: Air Force Sgt. J. Richard St. Pierre

NORTH ADMS, Mass. — J. Richard St. Pierre served his country in the Air Force as a sergeant from 1966 to 1970.    He said growing up in North Adams was a wonderful experience.    "There were so many people in the city, I played sports all the time ... took us minutes to get a bunch of kids together for a baseball or basketball game," he remembered.    He enlisted in the Air Force at 20 years old and completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.   "I chose the Air Force because my uncle had served in the Korean War and he came home in uniform — it was quite impressive," he said.
