North Adams Community Development Panel Mulls Affordable Housing Trust

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — One City Council committee is looking to take more active steps on housing and economic development in North Adams.   The Community Development Committee has met infrequently over the years, primarily to respond to referrals on zoning issues. Chair Andrew Fitch, however, has more recently responded to inquiries about housing opportunities and development of the Mohawk Theater. North Adams Man Facing Drug Charges Is Charged Again

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A city man has been charged with drug violations after a search warrant turned up drugs and trafficking materials Friday at a Houghton Street apartment.   Ronald Schneider, 49, of North Adams, was arraigned Monday in Northern Berkshire District Court with trafficking fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute Class B substance (subsequent offense), and conspiracy to violate drug laws.    According to police, members of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force and local police executed the search warrant at 255 Houghton St. in connection with an ongoing narcotics investigation.   As a result of the operation, investigators seized approximately

Plaque Dedicates Ketchum Memorial Meeting Room in Clarksburg

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town voted more than a dozen years ago to name the meeting room in Town Hall after one of its earliest settlers.    Last month, a sign dedicating the Ketchum Memorial Meeting Room was finally hung above the Select Board's table.    The bronzed cast aluminum sign was purchased by the town's Historical Society, said Jeanne Moulthrop, a member and chair of the Historical Commission.    The dedication had been the idea of Carl McKinney, a Select Board member at the time, who recommended an article naming the room be put before town meeting bank in 2012.    "He's been after us for awhile" about signage,

North Adams Schools Eye Level Service Budget But Wary of Federal Cuts

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — With federal and state funding sources uncertain, school officials are taking a cautious approach to next year's budget.   The Finance and Facilities Committee was presented Monday with a draft spending plan for fiscal 2026 that's projected to rise 3.36 percent over this year.    Some $940,000 in school choice funds will be used to offset increases; two grant-funded positions will be eliminated and several retirements will be factored in as well.    "Apparently $15 billion of the state budget is funded through federal funds," said Superintendent Barbara Malkas. NAPS to Hold Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration and Screening

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Public Schools (NAPS) will hold registration and screening for both Pre-K and Kindergarten programs for the 2025-2026 school year.    The events will take place at Brayton Elementary School, located at 20 Brayton Hill Terrace.   Pre-K application and screening will be conducted on March 24 and 25, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. McCann School Committee Approve FY26 Budget

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. The McCann Technical School Committee approved the fiscal year 2026 budget of $12,653,337, which increased 4.63 percent over fiscal year 2025.   After a brief review Thursday, the school committee unanimously approved the budget, which increased $560,451 over fiscal year 2025.   "We don’t step back; we don’t stand still," said Superintendent James Brosnan.   Adams representative Daniel Maloney Jr. said the main drivers of the increase are mostly out of the school’s control, specifically health insurance and contracted salary increases.   "This continues with the tradition that there is not a lot we have control
