By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:16AM / Wednesday, May 03, 2023
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The proposed school budget for fiscal 2024 is up $1.3 million over this year but the city's share will be level funded from this year at $3,838,270.   The budget was presented to the School Committee on Tuesday, following last week's review by the Finance and Facilities Committee.    The total budget draft is $20,054,352, a 6.91 percent increase over this year. The total increase is $1,296,564, exactly how much more the district is receiving in Chapter 70 state education aid. That aid totals $16,216,082 at the moment. (It's possible that figure may rise in the Senate's budget draft.)   Superintendent Barbara Malkas said last

Can you benefit from a 529 plan?

Another school year is coming to a close. And if you have young children, they're now a year closer to heading off to college or some other type of post-secondary education or training. So, if you haven't already done so, you may want to start preparing for these costs.   And they can be considerable. During the 2022-23 school year, the average estimated annual cost (tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation and other personal expenses) was nearly $28,000 for public four-year in-state schools and more than $57,000 for private nonprofit four-year schools, according to the College Board.   Of course, some students don't pay the full bill for college.

Clarksburg Officials Leaning on Minimal Reserves to Fund Budget
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:04AM / Monday, May 01, 2023
CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board is recommending the town drain its reserves to cover an unexpected increase in the school budget.    But it will still require more cuts from the school side to meet the 4 percent hike board members settled on.    "I want to show the school we're trying, we're making a substantial effort," said Chair Jeffrey Levanos at last week's meeting. "But the bottom line is that's all we have."   The school's budget came in at 8 1/2 percent higher, or about $236,000, largely because of an out-of-district placement expected to cost $326,000.   A recent school budget draft included a

By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:09AM / Friday, April 28, 2023
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Building Committee had a bit of sticker shock on Tuesday when the range for a renovation or new school construction topped out at $90 million.   The estimates covered the scenarios from building new at Brayton or Greylock or renovating either, with the higher ends for a prekindergarten through Grade 6 school.      The lowest range was for renovating Brayton — about $55 million to $75 million — and highest a new building Greylock from about $75 million to $90 million.    These figures are before the Massachusetts School Building Authority reimbursed eligible items at about 80 percent of the cost. The city's
