NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Building Committee on Tuesday approved the preliminary design program submission for the Greylock/Brayton school project. The elements of the design plan have been reviewed over a number of meetings; Tuesday's unanimous vote means the entire package can now be submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Tim Alix of Colliers International, the owner's project manager, reminded the committee that the program was the review of both school sites and potential development of those sites. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Adult beverages were OK'd for upcoming events on Eagle Street this summer. The License Commission last week approved two one-day licenses for alcohol at the Eagle Street Beach Party this July 15 and one day licenses for First Friday activities through October. Desperados for years had served up margaritas during the adult portion of the popular beach party, when Eagle Street is covered with sand from end to end. But with the restaurant now shuttered, the Elks Club has stepped in to do the pouring. Six flowers — each in a rainbow color and representing a Massachusetts wildflower — will be painted on Eagle Street by volunteers. The Public Arts Commission on Monday approved the street mural that will be part of the next First Friday event in June to mark Pride Month.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Steeple City Plaza was sold last month to a Connecticut realty company for $2 million. NRT Realty LLC of Avon, Conn., closed on the parcel on April 28, according to records at the Registry of Deeds. The manager is identified as N. Robert Trigg of Avon; a phone number listed for Trigg was not in service. Thomas Krens had indicated interest in purchasing the former the Kmart plaza as a site for his Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum.  FALMOUTH, Mass. — Jeanne Bokina Christie served her country as a "Donut Dollie" during the Vietnam War. I found her to be full of positive energy with an amazing, fun-loving personality. It was easy to see the tremendous impact that she had on our soldiers in Vietnam. She was recruited by the Red Cross for its Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO) program upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin.  MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations. "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff.
