 Before you turn 65, you'll want to become familiar with Medicare's rules and features. And if you're a high earner, you'll want to be especially aware of the Medicare premium surcharge — because, over time, it can add up to some significant dollars. The premium surcharge — known as the income related monthly adjustment amount, or IRMAA — is assessed on premiums for Medicare Parts B and D, and generally is based on an individual's modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of two years ago. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School has received a $600,000 state grant to expand its practical nursing program. Superintendent James Brosnan announced the grant at Thursday's School Committee meeting. The funds, which become available starting July 1, come after the school received a $3,110,000 grant to construct a 5,580 square-foot HVAC facility in December. "Great news for us that we were awarded [this]," Brosnan said. "Actually, we were the only vocational school that was awarded a grant for expanding, so we're really thrilled about that."  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More than 30 municipal entities that are members of Berkshire Health Group will see health insurance rates rise by 1 percent in fiscal year 2024. But the impact for many could be closer to a 9 percent hike depending on how they budgeted for health insurance costs in FY23. The board of the joint purchasing group Monday morning approved the 1 percent hike for the year that begins on July 1. But, unlike last year, there was no vote on whether to offer members a one-month "premium holiday" in the coming fiscal year.  CHESHIRE, Mass. — The town is has already begun working on plans for its annual Memorial Day parade, scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 29.
The Board of Selectman voted to form a separate Memorial Day Parade Committee last year. Board Chair Michelle Francesconi gave an update on the parade at the board's meeting Tuesday, saying this year's festivities will include reading essays submitted by students of Cheshire, something returning from previous years.
"There's no limit to the amount of essays that we would accept. Any essays that don't get accepted to be read at that the event would be published in something, or at least be put up and made available," she said.

ADAMS, Mass. — The Council on Aging is still waiting to transition its programming from the Visitor Center to the Memorial Building and is looking to the Community Development Department for help. The COA has been waiting for additional bathroom facilities to be completed for the facility, but the council and the town have so far been unable to obtain grant or other funding for the work. MCLA will offer in-person, drop-off, and virtual tax assistance to qualified taxpayers beginning February 6.
