Northern Berkshire Emergency Shelter Opened During Storm

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — National Grid reported more than 100,000 customers were without power during the height of the storm and that roughly 14,000 customers Berkshire, Worcester, Essex, Hampshire, Middlesex, and Franklin counties still needed service to be restored as of Wednesday morning.   There were pockets without power across the county, including about 300 customers in North County. Some had been told restoration wouldn't be possible until sometime Thursday.    The lack of power meant some people were unable to keep warm or had difficulties because of medical conditions.    The Northern Berkshire Emergency Planning Committee opened an emergency

North Adams Planners OK 11-Room Addition to Porches

Berkshire Hills Development purchased to the two houses more than a decade go. They were approved for demolition last year. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Planning Board on Monday gave the go-ahead for Porches to add 11 rooms to the downtown hotel.   The hotel on River Street is planning to knock down two adjacent buildings at 22-28 Veazie St. and replace them with a new structure that will contain 11 rooms and four studios, and will allow for seven underground parking spaces.   The hotel is allowed by right in the B-2 zone and has owned the two Veazie Street two-family homes for more than a decade. Their demolition was approved by the Historical Commission back in July

Nor'easter Could Drop Up to 2 Feet of Snow Across the Berkshires

MCLA Steam Line Project Improves HVAC Costs

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — As part of a critical infrastructure upgrade, MCLA looks to start Phase 2 of a steam/water line replacement project this spring with $11 million allocated by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM).     The construction began late last summer in front of Murdock Hall and behind Bowman Hall and will continue this spring between blocks A and B in the Flagg Townhouses. McCann School Committee Approves $11.5M Fiscal 2024 Budget

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Technical School budget is up just under 8 percent for the coming year largely because of contractual salary obligations, vocational and educational supplies, utilities and the addition of two more instructors.    The School Committee on Thursday approved the $11.5 million fiscal 2024 budget, of which about $4 million will be raised through assessments on its nine member communities. Veteran Spotlight: Airman 1st Class Tim Flynn

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Tim Flynn served his country in the Air Force as an airman first class from 1963 to 1967 and is a Vietnam veteran.    Born in Newport, Ky., he enlisted at the age of 17 with his dad co-signing for him.    "Had a couple friends that were going in so I decided I wanted to as well," he remembered. His basic training took him to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. "It was hot as hell as it was in the summer and they gave us salt pills — guys were dropping like flies from heat exhaustion.   "I wanted to be a pilot, but they gave me a test and found out I was color blind.
