FEMA Awards Funds to Massachusetts for COVID School Testing Costs

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending almost $13.5 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse it for the cost of providing testing at public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $13,450,826 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for contracting with Trans Med USA Inc. and Merrow Medical to provide test kits at schools between July 2022 and May 2023.   The department purchased and distributed 1,089,354 COVID-19 antigen tests to students, faculty and staff at schools statewide during that time period.   "FEMA is pleased to be able to assist

Clarksburg to Consider Community Preservation Act

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board on Thursday voted to place the adoption of the state Community Preservation Act on the town meeting warrant at the request of the Historical Commission.   The state law allows for towns to add up to a 3 percent surcharge on property taxes to fund historical preservation, open space and recreation and affordable housing that can be matched by state monies.   "We've become as a Historical Commission aware of the Community Preservation Act for us in the way of raising funds for historic preservation," Commissioner Susan Brandon told the Select Board. Berkshire Fire Departments Awarded Safety Equipment Grants

Anna Yan Ji Arabia's fight against cancer inspired her parents to help other families find a cure.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Joe and Kathy Arabia hosted a mini-golf tournament a decade ago to raise money for research on childhood cancer after the death of their daughter, 16-year-old Anna Yan Ji Arabia.   Kathy Arabia said they'd hoped to raise $1,000 — and instead raised 11 times that amount.    "We raised $11,000 and that all went to research and it's been incredible since then," she said. Crane Stationery Future Uncertain With Reports of Layoffs

COHOES, N.Y. — Mohawk Fine Papers, which owns Crane Stationery, is reportedly being acquired by the international Fedrigoni Group and employees at Crane were laid off.    The news was reported Wednesday by Albany Business Review, which also confirmed that 75 people in the Crane unit were notified on Tuesday that they were laid off "effective immediately."   The deal appears to be affecting what's left of the 220-year-old Crane Stationery, which Mohawk purchased in 2018. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Two new firefighters were sworn in on Tuesday night during City Council   Jeffrey Rodrigues and Jeffrey Tykot graduated Jan. 26 from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Springfield having completed the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program.   Mayor Jennifer Macksey introduced the firefighters, noting Rodrigues, of Dorchester, is a veteran of the Army Reserve and holds a bachelor of arts with a concentration in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts at Boston.    Tykot, of Williamstown, was a member of the New Ashford Fire Department and is a licensed emergency medical technician with Northern Berkshire EMS. Steeple City Plaza Sold for $1.75M; V&V Liquors Closes
