Planning Board Approves McCann HVAC BuildingJack Guerino, iBerkshires Staff

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Planning Board approved McCann Technical School's special permit request to build a new structure to house its incoming HVAC program. With the approval, Superintendent James Brosnan told the Planning Board Monday that he hopes to be able to break ground in August. "Everyone is busy, everyone is underfunded, everyone is understaffed, but I think we have a good project," he said. "I think we have done our homework, and the package we have going out is a good one. And the project isn't overwhelming." PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced the creation of a Water Quality Monitoring Certificate Program, a new offering for the fall 2023 semester. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Housing Authority (NAHA) Executive Director Jennifer Hohn said various improvements have been made to enhance building security. To address security concerns, Hohn said they have added more hours to security detail as well as added an entry monitoring desk at the front of Ashland Park. "[They] monitor who's coming in and out of the building when they are on duty along with constantly walking the halls etc.," Hohn said.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Although the entire county is experiencing flooding, North County seems to have been hit the hardest. In North Adams a sinkhole on State Street at the bottom of Morgan Ave has closed down a portion of the driving lane. A police officer is on-site directing traffic. Brooklyn Street is completely closed off with the roadway caving in along the side of the road. Church street, Houghton Street, and West Shaft Road, among others have also had significant flooding and damage. DPW trucks are driving throughout the city marking smaller sinkholes with traffic cones. Firetrucks have also been dispatched to help with flooding in 0 Comments

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Powerful storms are expected to cause dangerous flash flooding overnight Sunday and into Monday. While Central Vermont in particular could experience catastrophic flooding, the entire state and the Western Massachusetts are in danger of flooding and washouts. Gov. Phil Scott declared a state of emergency Sunday afternoon and the state's emergency operations system has been activated because of the "likelihood of widespread damage and posing a threat to property and public safety in Vermont." Lt. Col. Emery served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. MESQUITE, Texas — Maria Emery served her country with honor and distinction for 28 years in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. She grew up in Santa Ana, Calif., did her basic training in ROTC and was commissioned at the New Mexico Military Institute. "It was different. I learned about NMMI through a friend that went to my high school," she remembered. "It was a very structured, disciplined atmosphere ... being away from home was difficult also." MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says many people are having problems with bears looking for food near their homes, and with the food scrap ban in effect the department is providing tips for people who are composting at home so they can avoid attracting hungry bears. "We have been receiving lots of reports of bears on decks, tearing down bird feeders, wrecking beehives, killing chickens, and getting into trash, compost and garbage containers," said bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Hundreds of schoolchildren in North Adams are being kept busy through the public school system's summer camps and activities this month. About 200 children are attending the district's 21st Century Program through July, and new activities include internships for high school students. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Samuel Tackett went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in on Friday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to a 9-1 win over the Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at Joe Wolfe Field. Cedric Rose finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in a seven-hit attack for North Adams, which scored seven runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Jonathan Peterson earned the win in relief, striking out five hitters in two innings of work. Starter Julien Hernandez did not allow a run in four innings of work.
