BAAMS Camp Scholarships Available for Low-Income Pittsfield Students

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Berkshires' Academy for Advanced Musical Studies (BAAMS) 5th Berkshires' Summer Jazz Band Day Camp will be held Monday through Friday, Aug 14-18.   The camp will be held at the BAAMS' facility at Building 6, Heritage State Park, North Adams.   Students from approximately ages 12-18 may attend, and while some playing experience is helpful, the camp is open for students of all levels.   There are a few scholarships left for students: 1) who reside in the city of Pittsfield, and 2) whose families qualify as low-income.    There's a process to apply for the scholarship, and BAAMS will award every scholarship available to

Varalles Leads Drury to Giorgi League Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- James Varalles scored 18 points Tuesday to lead Pizza House/Drury High School to a 67-64 win over Northern Berkshire Sports Academy in the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League's B Division.   Donte Dillard scored 16 and Noah Arnhold added 12 for Drury.   Sam Moorman dominated the glass with 18 rebounds.   Jeff Sprague scored a game-high 24 for NBSA, which got a double-double from Brian Dowling (14 points, 10 rebounds) and 11 points from Kollin Allard.   In Tuesday's other game, Field and Field General Contracting defeated Ramuntos, 61-40.   Frank Field and Jameson Coughlan each scored 13 points to lead Field and Field. North Adams Council Mulls Short-Term Rental Fees

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The administration is proposing property owners with short-term rental units pay $500 a year to cover the cost of inspections.   "I'm looking for some guidance from council," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey at Tuesday's meeting. "I will say to you that our recommendation of $500 is just a recommendation. ... What I'm looking for is a fee so we can start doing our inspections and assessing."   The mayor said the administrative officer has done some legwork on comparable fees that she would be able to provide to whichever committee the City Council referred it to.    The short-term rental, or "AirBnB,"

SteepleCats Rally Past Martha's Vineyard for Home Win

Sarkis Leads Team to Giorgi League Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Hunter Sarkis scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds Sunday to lead Central Radio to an 81-54 win over RicksKicks in the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League B Division.   Jude Collins scored 17, and Seth Shepard added 16 in the win.   Brian Boudreau led RicksKicks with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Dennis Pregent did two tours in Vietnam with the Marines. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dennis Pregent served his country in the Marine Corps from 1965 to 1971, separating as a staff sergeant.    He grew up in North Adams and quit high school at 17 years of age in the middle of his senior year and enlisted in the Marines. He did his basic training at Parris Island and remembered the intensity of boot camp.   "There was a great deal of physical training and drilling," he said. Valley Blue Sox Walk Off Against SteepleCats

HOLYOKE, Mass. – Mason Wolf hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to complete an 8-7 comeback win for the Valley Blue Sox over the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Saturday night.   Valley scored three runs in the ninth after North Adams scored in the top of the inning to build a 7-5 lead.   Aiden Stewart went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Gehrig Ebel was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in for North Adams.   The SteepleCats (9-28) come home to host Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday evening at Joe Wolfe Field.

North Adams Neighborhood Asks for Signage Around Road Collapse

Some residents are asking for signage to not the  single lane and possibly better security around the collapse.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A road collapse last year has created a dangerous situation on Walnut Street, say residents.    Richard Dassatti and Joseph Labarbera told the Public Safety Committee on Tuesday that in addition to steep drop off the road, the jersey barriers blocking it off create one-lane traffic on the narrow street.   "There's no signs warning of one lane and there are no stop or yield signs," said Dassatti. Marissia Bibbo-LaFog had been working with older children but enjoys that she can spend more time with the younger children since the preschool covers several years of age.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Berkshire Family YMCA preschool teacher Marissia Bibbo-LaFog was selected as the July Teacher of the Month.   The Teacher of the Month series runs for the next 10 months in partnership with Berkshire Community College.   Bibbo-LaFog has been working in the child-care field for 11 years starting at the age of 15 as a camp counselor.   She also worked with high schoolers and just recently shifted to preschool, working as an assistant preschool

SANFORD, Maine -- Samuel Tackett went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs Friday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to a 6-3 win over the Mainers in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Taconic High School graduate Sam Sherman also went 2-for-4 for North Adams, which collected 10 hits in snapping a 10-game losing streak.   Will Tobin earned the win on the mound, striking out seven and allowing just two runs in five innings of work.   North Adams (9-27) travels to Holyoke to play the Valley Blue Sox on Saturday.
