BAAMS Camp Scholarships Available for Low-Income Pittsfield Students| 05:00PM / Wednesday, July 26, 2023 | |
 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Berkshires' Academy for Advanced Musical Studies (BAAMS) 5th Berkshires' Summer Jazz Band Day Camp will be held Monday through Friday, Aug 14-18. The camp will be held at the BAAMS' facility at Building 6, Heritage State Park, North Adams. Students from approximately ages 12-18 may attend, and while some playing experience is helpful, the camp is open for students of all levels. There are a few scholarships left for students: 1) who reside in the city of Pittsfield, and 2) whose families qualify as low-income. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The administration is proposing property owners with short-term rental units pay $500 a year to cover the cost of inspections. "I'm looking for some guidance from council," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey at Tuesday's meeting. "I will say to you that our recommendation of $500 is just a recommendation. ... What I'm looking for is a fee so we can start doing our inspections and assessing." The mayor said the administrative officer has done some legwork on comparable fees that she would be able to provide to whichever committee the City Council referred it to. Dennis Pregent did two tours in Vietnam with the Marines. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dennis Pregent served his country in the Marine Corps from 1965 to 1971, separating as a staff sergeant. He grew up in North Adams and quit high school at 17 years of age in the middle of his senior year and enlisted in the Marines. He did his basic training at Parris Island and remembered the intensity of boot camp. "There was a great deal of physical training and drilling," he said. Some residents are asking for signage to not the single lane and possibly better security around the collapse. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A road collapse last year has created a dangerous situation on Walnut Street, say residents. Richard Dassatti and Joseph Labarbera told the Public Safety Committee on Tuesday that in addition to steep drop off the road, the jersey barriers blocking it off create one-lane traffic on the narrow street. The Teacher of the Month series runs for the next 10 months in partnership with Berkshire Community College. Bibbo-LaFog has been working in the child-care field for 11 years starting at the age of 15 as a camp counselor.
