Up Front for DeMar To Be Held on Veterans Day | 08:00AM / Monday, October 09, 2023 | |
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The annual Up Front for DeMar 5K race and 1-mile walk will be held on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023. This annual event is to raise money for the SPC Michael R. DeMarsico II scholarship fund and to honor Michael and all who serve and have served. SPC DeMarsico was killed in action on Aug. 16, 2012, while serving in Afghanistan. "DeMar" to his fellow battle buddies, served at the front of his battalion searching for IED's. The young specialist discovered 16 IEDs, saving many men in his unit, before stepping on one. DALTON, Mass. — The Green Committee is mulling the potential of a composting program at the transfer station. The program would allow residents to bring organic compost to the transfer station without charge. The compost station would have three sections separated by concrete cubes. Every six months to a year, the compost would be moved to a different section as it breaks down, committee member Antonio Pagliarulo said.  AVON, Mass. — Kris Tebbetts served his country in the Air Force as a staff sergeant from 1965 to 1968. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. "I was 17 years old. Basic, it was OK, I didn't mind it. I graduated from high school in June and was like 'what do I do now?'" he remembered. "I went to Florida on vacation then came home and saw the recruiter." Tebbetts' first assignment was at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss., where he learned Morse code.  CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Clarksburg School is applying a for a half-million Safe Routes to School grant to improve safe access to the Community Center. "Essentially what we're proposing is a safe route from the school to the town field and a crosswalk to the senior center," said Assistant Superintendent Tara Barnes. "That's the evacuation plan ... not that we would ever want an evacuation to happen but if it were to happen, we want the safest possible route for the students to get out." NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— Off to its best start since 2015, the MCLA volleyball team Saturday made short work of MASCAC rival Mass Maritime in the Trailblazers annual Dig Pink Game, sweeping the Bucs 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 to earn its first conference win of the season. Scientists weren't sure the trees could survive being inverted; once they outgrew their tubs, they were planted earthside and thrived. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The trees will no longer grow upside-down in the Steeple City. Natalie Jeremijenko's meditation on resiliency, "Tree Logic," will be retired after 25 years of turning heads at the entrance to Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum announced on its Facebook page this week that the trees will be removed. They will be on view until Monday. The trees themselves haven't been there that long. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Northern Berkshire Veterans Agent Stephen Roy said the veterans food pantry is in short supply with an increased need in the community. "We continue to see more and more folks in this time of need," Roy said. "The price of retail food in grocery stores has exploded, nearly doubling since 2021 with no end in sight. Although our food bank certainly doesn't have everything, it surely lessens the sting at the cash register when folks must buy what we don't have." Columbus' voyage had been celebrated on significant anniversaries but did not become an official holiday until being recognized by Colorado in 1905. It was declared a federal holiday in 1937.
