More than 600 Participate in Steel Rail Races

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Matthew Ferraro was the first runner across the finish line at the MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon.   Ferraro clocked a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes flat on the Ashuwilticook Rail Trail course.   He finished a little more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Nick Reid (2:46:15).   Simone Veale won the race's women's division in a time of 3:18:42. She beat out Jill Hussain, who covered the course in 3:27:23.   The fastest marathoner on Sunday was Stephen Gulley, a hand cyclist, who clocked a time of 2:15:03.   The 26.2-mile circuit was covered by 150 finishers ranging in age from 18 (William Hanley in 14th place) to 72 (Ric Nudell, who

Veteran Spotlight: Air Force Staff Sgt. Cory Ahonen

EASTON, Mass. — Cory Ahonen, chief engagement officer for the state's Executive Office of Veterans Services, served his country in the Air Force from 2008 to 2014 as a staff sergeant.    He grew up in Sandwich, graduated from Sandwich High School and did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.    "I joined to get out of a dead-end path," he said. "It was my second time in my life on a plane. I was excited and grateful to be here. I knew I needed to make the most of this opportunity. Mass MoCA Commission Approves Mental Health Practices as Tenants

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mass MoCA Commission on Thursday approved three new tenants for Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.    Kimma Stark, project manager at the museum, gave the commission the rundown on each of the new tenants.    Eric Beeman is a licensed mental health counselor who uses art in his therapy. He holds a master's degree in expressive arts and arts therapy from Lesley University, where he's also taught graduate-level practices and principles of expressive art therapy.   He integrates creative arts based interventions into his clinical work including drawing painting, poetry, writing, brief drama and roleplay, movement and sound.

BAAMS Receives $10K Donation from Noel Family

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshires' Academy for Advanced Musical Studies Inc. (BAAMS) has recently garnered significant support from the family of the late Edward J. Noel Jr. 

This backing came in the form of a $10,000 donation awarded in April, facilitated by Kirby Noel, son of the late North Adams educator, through NexPoint Philanthropies of Dallas, Texas, an auxiliary of the Dallas Foundation.

North Adams Finance Committee Endorses Additional Positions in $49M Budget

Neal Secures $700,000 for North Adams Flood Chutes Project

Mayor Jennifer Macksey at last August's signing of an agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — U.S. Rep. Richard Neal has secured $700,000 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' budget to complete a feasibility study of the Hoosic River flood chutes.     The Corps of Engineers is in the midst of a three-year, $3 million study of the aging concrete flood chutes that control the passage of the river through the city.    North Adams has ponied up $500,000 as part of its share of the study and another $1.5 million is expected to come from state and federal coffers. The Board of Directors of the Al Nelson Friendship Center Food Pantry in North Adams wishes to thank the North Adams, Clarksburg and Florida Mountain community for their generation donations to the May 11 Letter Carrier Food Drive.

We received a total of 3,595 pounds of food and personal care items.

We equally want to thank our Letter Carriers who work out of the North Adams Post Office. They again went above and beyond in collecting the donations and bringing them to the collection and sorting site. They are always a pleasure to work with.

We also want to thank the Northern Berkshire United Way, the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, and the Berkshire United Way

North Adams Draft Ordinance Allows More Retail Cannabis

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former V&V liquor store is expected to reopen under new management.    The License Board on Tuesday approved two license transfers including one for V&V and a license for a restaurant in the former BrewHaHa on West Main Street.    Tracy Rackauskas and Benjamin Dinsmore, owners of Migration Taco truck, purchased the old West End Market for $253,500 in December. Andrews, Brule Win Seats in Clarksburg

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town saw a tepid turnout for Tuesday's annual election despite races for Select Board and School Committee.    Town Clerk Marilyn Gomeau said about 22 percent of the town's registered voters, or 273 out of 1,254, cast ballots.    Colton Andrews, a union executive, took first place with 137 votes in the three-way race for Select Board; Bryana Malloy garnered 70 votes and Seth Alexander 64.    Alexander also lost his challenge to School Committee incumbent Cynthia Brule, 191-78. However, he earned 199 votes unopposed for a one-year term as moderator and 198 for a five-year seat on the Planning Board.    Re-elected
