North Adams Schools Awarded Literacy Grant

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Public Schools received a $8,652 state grant to implement Appleseeds, a package of materials for teaching foundational reading skills in kindergarten through second grade.
While Appleseeds is free for download to all Massachusetts school districts, the grant will fund professional printing of the materials, plus professional development for educators.
Appleseeds is a free, evidence-based reading foundational skills program for students in grades K-2. Districts can use it to supplement existing curriculum that does not have a strong foundational skill component.

SteepleCats Earn First Win of Season

DANBURY, Conn. -- Caden Dulin doubled twice, and Elijah Lambros homered Saturday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to their first win of the season, a 10-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Warren Holzemer and Joey Pagano each had a pair of hits in an eight-hit attack for North Adams.   The SteepleCats (1-1) used five different pitchers in the game.   Starter Tanner Duke struck out four and allowed one run in four innings of work. Jerome Manarchuck picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.   North Adams is scheduled to host Ocean State on Sunday afternoon at 4 at Joe Wolfe Field.

North Adams Schools Preparing for Big Move, Greylock Closure

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The North Adams Public Schools is already preparing for its big move this summer.    The closure of Greylock School at the end of the school year and the reconfiguring of grades between Brayton and Colegrove Park means relocating classrooms, teachers and students.   Superintendent Barbara Malkas told the School Committee on Tuesday that the goal is to have everything moved by Aug. 15; all packing will be completed by June 14.   "We expect that we will be vacating all classrooms and moving packing materials to staging areas located at each building," she said. MYSTIC, Conn. -- Julian Stevens Wednesady went 3-for-5 with a home run to lead the Mystic Schooners to a 9-1 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Caden Dulin and Max Palinski each had a pair of hits for the 'Cats in their season opener.   Tyler McKinstry took the loss for North Adams, going four innings on the mound and allowing just one earned run.   The SteepleCats Thursday play their home opener at Joe Wolfe Field, hosting the Newport Gulls.
