Veteran Spotlight: Lt. Col. Maria Adame-Emery

Lt. Col. Emery served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.  MESQUITE, Texas — Maria Emery served her country with honor and distinction for 28 years in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.    She grew up in Santa Ana, Calif., did her basic training in ROTC and was commissioned at the New Mexico Military Institute.   "It was different. I learned about NMMI through a friend that went to my high school," she remembered. "It was a very structured, disciplined atmosphere ... being away from home was difficult also."   Her first assignment would take her to the G-2 40th Infantry Division in the California National Guard. Composting with Bears in Mind

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says many people are having problems with bears looking for food near their homes, and with the food scrap ban in effect the department is providing tips for people who are composting at home so they can avoid attracting hungry bears. 

"We have been receiving lots of reports of bears on decks, tearing down bird feeders, wrecking beehives, killing chickens, and getting into trash, compost and garbage containers," said bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau.  "We are offering some guidance on how to compost at home without attracting bears."

Vermont Comes Back to Beat SteepleCats

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont Mountaineers scored on a balk in the bottom of the fifth to earn a 4-3 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League on Saturday night.   The SteepleCats took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, when Sam Tackett hit a two-run home run.   Dominick Marcoccio started and went 4 and two-thirds innings on mound for North Adams, giving up two earned runs and taking the loss.   The SteepleCats (9-18) which hosts Martha's Vineyard on Monday.

North Adams Schools Offer Summer Programs From K to Early College

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Hundreds of schoolchildren in North Adams are being kept busy through the public school system's summer camps and activities this month.    About 200 children are attending the district's 21st Century Program through July, and new activities include internships for high school students. The programs are funded largely through grant funding, including 21st Century and special education grants.    The offerings were presented to the School Committee before the end of the school year.    Assistant Superintendent Timothy Callahan said more than 130 students had signed up with site director Noella Carlow for the popular 21st

Tackett Powers SteepleCats Past Blue Sox

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Samuel Tackett went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in on Friday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to a 9-1 win over the Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at Joe Wolfe Field.   Cedric Rose finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in a seven-hit attack for North Adams, which scored seven runs in the second inning to take control of the game.   Jonathan Peterson earned the win in relief, striking out five hitters in two innings of work. Starter Julien Hernandez did not allow a run in four innings of work.   North Adams (8-17) travels to play the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday.

NA Fire Chief on Leave Following Accident

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The fire chief is on paid administrative leave following his involvement in a pedestrian accident on Thursday morning.    The pedestrian, a woman, was taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield; a relative posted on Facebook that she was hospitalized with "a skull fracture and had bleeding in her brain."   Mayor Jennifer Macksey said on Friday that Brent Lefebvre is on paid leave "pending investigation."    The accident occurred at approximately 8:23 a.m. on Thursday on River Street near the Veazie Street intersection.    Lefebvre was in a city vehicle and the pedestrian was apparently crossing River

North Adams Seeks Input on School Project

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The community is being asked to weigh in on grade options for the Brayton/Greylock school project.    A survey available at www.napsk12.org via SurveyMonkey offers two options to choose from —two elementary schools with Grades prekindergarten through 6 or one school with preK-2 and another with Grades 3-6.   The city has been engaged in a feasibility study for a new or renovated elementary school with the Massachusetts School Building Authority since 2022. Roberson Scores 34 in Giorgi League Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Tank Roberson scored 34 points Wednesday to lead Cold Hearts to an 86-84 win over Battle of the Future in the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League.   Sean Harrigan added 22 points, and Shaq Ardrey had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.   Battle of the Future’s Daemond Carter tied for game-high honors with 34 points. Deshawn Hamlet and Bryce Webb each had a double-double in the loss.   Hamlet scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Bristol Sweeps SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Bristol Blues Wednesday earned a double-header sweep of the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   In the nightcap, the Blues erased an early 3-0 deficit to earn an 8-4 win.   Gunnar Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run and a pair of RBIs for North Adams.   In Game 1, Bristol jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first en route to a 7-1 victory.   Johnson drove in North Adams’ run with one of its three hits.   The SteepleCats (7-17) host the Valley Blue Sox on Friday.

Clarksburg Getting Free Technical Help on Wastewater System Repairs

Reynolds' Homer Gives SteepleCats Road Split
