ACS Swat 16s Outslug Greylock Thunder

ADAMS, Mass. – Ashlyn Lesure hit a two-run home run and scored three times Thursday to lead the ACS Swat to a 16-7 win over the Greylock Thunder in the Berkshire County Fast Pitch Softball 16U division.   The Swat jumped on top with a four-run first inning that featured an RBI single by Nora Kondel.   The hosts built that lead to 8-0 over the next two innings as Gabby Driscoll held the Thunder to two hits and stranded six runners in the first three frames.   With one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the third, Leisure hit a bomb deep to left field and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park homer.   The Thunder struck back for four runs in the top

Taylors' Pitch New Proposal to North Adams Redevelopment Authority

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More than a year after they first proposed investing $2 million into Western Heritage State Park, Bay State Hospitality Group was back before the Redevelopment Authority with a slightly less ambitious plan.    Siblings Colleen and Sean Taylor had proposed to rehabilitate Buildings 1, 2 and 3 in the park. Dillard, Drury Earn Giorgi League Win

North Adams Airport Renews Gliding Club Lease

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Airport Commission on Tuesday voted to renew the leases for the Mohawk Soaring Club, stymying the attempts of another club to set flight.    Michael Milazzo had approached the commission last month about space for tie-down gliders and increasing soaring operations.   But when the commission voted to renew the 70-year-old club's use of the Civil Air Patrol building, tie-downs and hangar, Milazzo pulled his proposal for the time being.    "We need cable space to operate and you're about to sign off the cable space," Milazzo said. Brien Center Opening Peer Recovery Support Center in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Brien Center has been awarded a new five-year contract from the state Bureau of Substance and Addiction Services for a peer recovery support center.    Located at 37 Main St., the center will be an accessible hub for peer support and substance-use services as well as a support center for families affected by addiction. Vermont Mountaineers Edge SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Vermont Mountaineers Monday scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a tie and went on to a 5-4 win over the SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Gehrig Ebel tripled and drove in a run for North Adams, which got hits from Taconic graduates Cedric Rose and Sam Sherman.   Dominick Marcoccio struck out three and allowed one hit and no runs in four innings on the mound for North Adams.   The SteepleCats (8-25) goes to Montpelier to play Vermont on Thursday.

MassDEP Issues Air Quality Alert for Berkshires, WMass

BOSTON — The state Department of Environmental Protection is again warning of reduced air quality Monday afternoon because of the ongoing wildfires in Canada.    An advisory is in effect through midnight Tuesday for Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester counties.   The agency is advising people in sensitive groups to reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion, take more breaks, do less intense activities, follow asthma action plans, and keep quick relief medicine handy. Lenox Soccer Program Seeks Newcomers from Pre-K to Fourth Grade

LENOX, Mass. -- Beginning soccer players in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade are welcome to join the Mighty Kickers program this fall.   The development program is open to children from any community.
