Seaman John Keating, above right, and in his whites, left. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — John Keating served his country in the Navy from 1949 to 1953 as a seaman first class during the Korean War. The North Adams native also had two brothers who served – Lloyd in the Army and Robert, a gunner's mate on a Navy destroyer. At 92 years of age, he is tremendously kind, genuine, highly intelligent and possesses an extraordinary memory. It’s been disappointing, but hardly surprising, to see the knee-jerk reactions to the proposed temporary use of a vacant MCLA dorm for transitional family housing. The stereotypes of homelessness have been alive and well among our local leaders and among the public. The conjured images of filthy drug addicts pushing shopping carts and begging for money have been splattered across social media and whispered over back fences. This is not what family homelessness looks like.
Families are some of the most difficult people to provide shelter for when they lose their housing. When you have families with kids, caregivers, multiple generations, etc.. the public’s

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city is about to lose its third city clerk in just over a year. Joshua Vallieres submitted his resignation on Friday effective May 5, writing that he was planning to start a family and seeking a "better work/life balance." He was sworn in on July 27 last year after several months as the assistant and then acting clerk. "This has been one of the most professionally satisfying times in my life, and I am grateful to the offices, boards, and individuals that have been there in support of this tremendous learning experience," he wrote in his letter. CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town could be looking at a Proposition 2 1/2 override if it can't get its more than $5 million budget down. The town's total budget is up $178,776, up 3 percent over this year's $4,912,293 spending plan based on a level-funded school budget. But the school's $3 million draft budget is up 8 1/2 percent, or about $236,000, largely because of an out-of-district placement expected to cost between $175,000 and $200,000.
