 Monday, April 15, is Patriots Day, a state holiday marking the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord that began the American Revolution. The day has been celebrated on the third Monday in April since 1969.
It was on the morning of April 20, 1775, that Paul Revere and other riders began the alert across and beyond Massachusetts Colony that troops were planning to advance from Boston to the towns of Lexington and Concord. They were to seize a cache of gunpowder and arms and capture revolutionaries Sam Adams and John Hancock. (Local legend claims that Israel Bissell, later of Hinsdale, rode all the way to Philadelphia, but most historians dismiss it.)

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire County Fall Senior Golf series returns in September with events on five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 18. It is the 22nd year of the series, which is a fund-raiser for junior golf in the county, and it is open to players aged 50 and up. The series will feature two divisions for each event based on the combined ages of the playing partners. Golfers play from the white tees (or equivalent) with participants 70 and over or who have a handicap of more than 9 able to play from the forward tees.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Windsor Lake Recreation Commission has been charged with researching fees and amenities at campgrounds. "We haven't looked at the fees have been in a long, long time," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey at Monday's meeting. "So I would love for this commission to do some research. However, the flip side of that is I feel very guilty about going up. There are sites where sometimes you have electricity and sometimes you don't. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday passed to a second reading the adoption of a Mass General Law that will bring its parking fees into compliance. The Finance Committee has been working on pulling all the fees and fines out of ordinance and into an appendix that can be changed much easier. "We had a couple of meetings in the Finance Committee, about this specifically," said Councilor Andrew Fitch, a committee member. Many Forks Farm has a new farmer, Molly Comstock, already at work planting seeds. CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Molly Comstock and Sharon Wyrrick have traveled in the same circle for years, both farming at opposite ends of Berkshire County. Around the time Wyrrick was looking for a successor after more than a decade at her farm in Clarksburg, Comstock's lease in Alford was suddenly not renewed. The future of Many Forks Farm and Colfax Farm hung in limbo. It took some time but, ultimately, with the help of the Berkshire Natural Resource Council, Wyrrick and Comstock were able to work out a plan for Many Forks Farm to continue under 5 Comments

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshires won't see a full eclipse on Monday as we're south and east of the path of totality, but we should see about 94 to 96 percent of it. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration says North Berkshire will be at the highest at 96.3 percent of totality at 3:26 p.m. on Monday. People along the path of totality will be able to the Sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured. The eclipse will begin about 2:13 and end at 4:37 p.m. During this time, the sky will darken and will be noticeable even if there is cloud coverage.  FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Mount Everett graduate Gwen Carpenter went 6-for-9 with a home run, a triple, three doubles and four RBIs Saturday to lead the Framingham State softball team to a double-header sweep of MCLA.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — An earthquake in northern New Jersey this morning could be felt all throughout the Northeast, from Augusta, Maine, to Washington, D.C., to Buffalo, N.Y. The magnitude 4.8 quake was registered by the U.S. Geological Survey at 10:23 on Friday morning near Tewksbury Township, a town of about 6,000 west of New York City. There are reports the epicenter was in Lebanon, a smaller nearby community. The vibration in North Berkshire went on for about 20 seconds and was strong enough to shake the leaves on the office plants in the iBerkshires office.
