 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Committee invites the public to the annual Northern Berkshire MLK Jr. Day of Service to celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with this annual day of volunteering. Gather Monday, Jan. 15, as the Northern Berkshire community celebrates the life, principles, and ideals of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in a "Day of Service." A celebratory luncheon will follow. The celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. at MCLA's Church Street Center with coffee and pastries.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is gearing up to relaunch under a new name once it secures a location. No Paws Left Behind hopes to open in North Adams, carrying on the no-kill shelter's legacy of homing cats and dogs. The Sonsini shelter announced its closing last summer and manager Noelle Howland saved it by taking leadership.
"We're pretty much ready to go but I just don't have a location yet," Howland said.
The municipal shelter in North Adam's Department of Public Works building is a possible location, she said, but it is a multi-step process that has not yet been set in stone. She added that there are "so many

 WALTHAM, Mass. — National Grid crews worked through the overnight hours, continuing their efforts to fully restore service from a powerful weekend storm that dumped up to 18 inches of snow across parts of Massachusetts. Since the storm's arrival Saturday night, National Grid has restored service to more than 54,000 customers, working around the clock through conditions that included poor visibility, snow-filled streets and roads, falling temperatures, and downed wires, branches, and trees.  FALMOUTH, Mass. — Carter Hunt served his country with bravery and distinction in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. He retired as a captain. Growing up in Leominster, he attended Boston College, where he was a starting defensive end on the BC football team, graduating in 1968. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va., then attended Basic School. He was sent to Vietnam in October 1969 and described it as, "a busy place … we were scrambling to headquarters to get our assignment." City Woman Wins Hometown Holidays Gift Basket |
Jonathan Secor had some help in pulling the winning ticket.
Congrats to Janet O'Neill of North Adams who won the big Hometown Holidays gift basket on Thursday. O'Neill won some $1,300 worth of gift certificates and merchandise.
The drawing could be entered by spending $50 downtown during the Thursday night Hometown Holiday events. Jonathan Secor of MCLA Gallery 51 said 62 people had entered the contest (including the editor of iBerkshires &mdash amazing how much cat toys cost nowadays).
