Clarksburg Struggling With Budget Hike, Low Reserves
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:21PM / Thursday, March 30, 2023
CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town could be looking at a Proposition 2 1/2 override if it can't get its more than $5 million budget down.   The town's total budget is up $178,776, up 3 percent over this year's $4,912,293 spending plan based on a level-funded school budget.   But the school's $3 million draft budget is up 8 1/2 percent, or about $236,000, largely because of an out-of-district placement expected to cost between $175,000 and $200,000.   "We're not your enemies, we're your friends but we have to be honest with you — we don't have any money," Town Administrator Carl McKinney told a joint meeting of the Select Board and

Letter: Homeless Housing in MCLA Dorm is NOT the Solution
Letter to the Editor,
08:00AM / Thursday, March 30, 2023

To the Editor:

Initially, I was not against the idea of MCLA's president, Jamie Birge, announcing plans to open a currently empty dorm building for housing homeless families, however, the more I've talked with neighbors and friends, the more I believe it's a horrible idea.

As a direct neighbor to MCLA, I didn't have a problem with the Boardman Block being used for people in recovery once I learned about the support services provided (even though I don't believe it's an ideal companion to the students that work and live nearby and that MCLA should have had the vision to acquire it for themselves for future needs/expansion).

This current plan reinforces my long

Letter: CHP Supports MCLA Homeless Shelter
Letter to the Editor,
11:00AM / Wednesday, March 29, 2023

To the Editor:

CHP Berkshires [Community Health Programs] wishes to express its support for repurposing a dormitory at MCLA into a residence for homeless families. This is a commendable and progressive initiative in our Northern Berkshire community.

There are reasonable questions about what support services would be available to residents of Berkshire Towers. CHP Berkshires and its mobile health team already care for residents of a Pittsfield shelter, and we are prepared to provide medical care for Berkshire Towers residents as well, if this plan comes to fruition. CHP North Adams Family Medical and Dental is open to all patients, and our practice staff is uniquely committed to caring

What goes into a retirement 'paycheck'?
Submitted by Edward Jones,
08:03AM / Tuesday, March 28, 2023
During your working years, you generally know how much money you're bringing in, so you can budget accordingly. But once you're retired, it's a different story. However, with some diligence, you can put together a "paycheck" that can help you meet your income needs.     Where will this paycheck come from? Social Security benefits should replace about 40 percent of one's pre-retirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration, but this figure varies widely based on an individual's circumstances. Typically, the higher your income before you retire, the lower the percentage will be replaced by Social Security. Private pensions have
