State Fire Marshal: Cooking Safety Tips for Thanksgiving

STOW, Mass. — State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey is urging residents to make fire safety a priority in the kitchen as we approach Thanksgiving Day, the number one day for home fires in Massachusetts.   "Each year, we see about twice as many fires on Thanksgiving as on the next-closest day," State Fire Marshal Ostroskey said. Berkshire Food Project Thanksgiving Dinner Returns In-Person

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshire Food Project held an in-person Thanksgiving dinner meal for the first time since 2019.    "It's great to have people back in here dining. This is what the program originally started as in 1987," Berkshire Food Project  Executive Director Mark Rondeau said Monday, Nov 21, at the first seating. "It started to fight hunger but also social isolation."   The Berkshire Food Project has not held an in-person Thanksgiving meal since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. Oh Be Thankful Dessert Contest Returns

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Oh Be Thankful Pie Auction returns this year to the American Legion on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 5 p.m.   The event, organized by Gabriel Abbott Memorial School, benefits the Al Nelson Friendship Food Pantry and the Berkshire Humane Society.    Desserts will be rated by community judges.   Each contestant bakes two desserts: one for the judges to try and one to be auctioned off. Attendees also get to try a small sample.    After the judges rate the desserts, the auction begins.

Small Business Saturday Celebrated in Downtown Bennington

Berkshire Food Project Hosts Thanksgiving Dinner

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshire Food Project (BFP) will hold a sit-down Thanksgiving Dinner on Monday, Nov. 21, with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.   This will be the first time the program has hosted indoor dining since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.    The project will return to its walk-through format on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and then it will be closed the rest of Thanksgiving week.   "This is a great experiment," said Mark Rondeau, executive director. MCLA Men's Basketball Gets Second Win

North Adams Finance Committee Goes to Bat for Business

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Finance Committee on Thursday voted to recommend a property tax split of 1.715, bucking the mayor's request to go to the maximum on the commercial side.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey and Assessor Jessica Lincourt had advised a shift of 1.75 at last week's tax classification hearing, saying this would be an opportune year to relieve some of the burden on residents.   The City Council, however, wasn't convinced this was the right move especially after years of trying to reduce the "absurdly high" gap between residential and commercial rates.    The proposed residential rate would be $17.46 and the commercial rate $38.35

'Be a Santa to a Senior' Returns for Holiday Season

'Be a Santa' trees are located in all three Stop & Shop stores in North Adams and Pittsfield, as well as Wild Oats in Williamstown and the Plant Connector in North Adams. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The "Be a Santa to a Senior" program has returned to Berkshire County, giving residents a chance to provide a customized gift to an older adult who could use some holiday cheer.  

Last week, trees went up in five retail locations with ornaments that have a name and wish list on them.  To be a Santa, shoppers can return an unwrapped gift to the location with the ornament attached.
