 BOSTON — While the Commonwealth experienced an increase in precipitation over the previous month, there are regions of the state that continue to be impacted by long term drought conditions. Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Beth Card announced that Western Mass remains in a level 0 normal drought condition. Card also announced the following drought declarations: the Central and Southeast Regions have upgraded and will join the Western Region at Level 0-Normal Conditions; the Northeast and Cape Cod Regions have been upgraded and will join the Connecticut River Valley Region at Level 1-Mild Drought; and, the Islands Region will remain at Level 0 Comments

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $21 million to reimburse the state's Department of Early Childhood Education and Care for personal protective equipment and supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The $21,435,775 public assistance grant will reimburse the department for purchasing and distributing PPE and cleaning/sanitizing supplies to more than 6,100 child-care providers at no cost so they could remain open during the pandemic. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department recommends Vermonters wait to put up bird feeders until Dec. 1 to avoid attracting bears. "Winter bird feeding is a good way to attract birds arriving from Canada, including evening grosbeaks and purple finches, as well as resident birds including northern cardinals and black-capped chickadees," said Doug Morin, Vermont Fish and Wildlife's bird project leader. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City of North Adams is holding their annual food drive from Monday, Dec. 5 through Friday, Dec. 16, 2022. This year's drive will seek to re-stock the shelves of the Northern Berkshire Interfaith Action Initiative's Al Nelson Friendship Center Food Pantry, located at 43 Eagle Street in North Adams. Donations may be dropped off at collection boxes at City Hall, the North Adams Public Schools, the North Adams Public Library, the Mary Spitzer Center and the North Adams Police and Fire Departments. After all, it's been two years since the students and staff at Gabriel Abbott Memorial School in Florida have whipped up delectable desserts designed to entice community members to part with their dough. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Residents of Berkshire County can get their cat spayed or neutered for a $50 registration fee, which includes surgery and a rabies vaccination, through a grant awarded to Berkshire Humane Society from Massachusetts Animal Coalition's license plate program. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday split on the city's tax classification to vote to 5-4 to set a commercial shift of 1.715. The compromise recommended at last week's Finance Committee meeting wasn't enough to convince Councilors Jennifer Barbeau, Marie T. Harpin and Peter Oleskiewicz, whose concern was the impact on residential property owners. Councilor Wayne Wilkinson joined them in a protest vote against raising the shift from last year's 1.68. The 1865 structure and its 1960s brick addition were demolished last Thursday. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former Sun Cleaners finally came down last week years after the city was first approached to take over the troubled structure. The city took possession of the former dry cleaning shop in 2019 as part of a portfolio of properties transferred by the now-dissolved Housing Opportunities Inc. That process took several years because of site testing and over concerns of liabilities for cleanup.
